Alaska: Great Deal on 'The Great Land'

It was discovered in 1741 and used to be a part of Russia. In 1867, after lengthy negotiations, Alaska was sold to the United States for the price of $7.2 million. It was called a "box of ice", a "polar bear garden" and Walrussia. But in the language of its indigenous peoples, the word Alaska means The Great Land. Snowstorm Aftermath - Part I - January 6, 2012 - Cordova, Alaska

Part I of a series, published on January 7, documenting the troubles of one small, coastal Alaskan town, Cordova. To view Part II, published on January 11, visit: www.youtube.com Cordova has had a rough winter thus far, and today the Mayor officially declared the excessive snow load an emergency situation following the January 5, 2012 "Snowpocalypse". This small coastal Alaskan community does not have the resources necessary to keep on top of the massive amount of snow that has fallen since December 17, 2011....and that is continuing to fall. Despite this, everyone is working together. Shoveling, shoveling, shoveling - everybody's shoveling. Cordova is a pretty special community, and when faced with disaster locals work together to overcome the situation. I'm proud to call Cordova home! According to CEC, 175 inches fell from November 1 - January 6. (14.5 feet!)

Glacier Surfing Alaska

World champion big wave surfers, Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala rode into surfing history last week when they towed into a monster tsunami created by Child's Glacier in South-Central Alaska. The creator/producer, Ryan Casey, "disovered" the wave in 1995, while on location shooting in Alaska. Then after finishing his last film, Quest, a documentary on big wave surfing, he showed Garrett the wave... that was six months ago. So after a short scout in June, we went up in August to film this... For more information contact: info@deepwaterfilms or Ryan @ ryanmayrcasey@hotmail.com

Surviving Alone in Alaska

Heimo Korth is the last man standing in 19 million acres of Alaskan wilderness. His neighbors are polar bears and caribous. Say good bye to civilization and see how they do it in the arctic circle on the last frontier in America. In 1980, Jimmy Carter established the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the Alaskan Interior, cutting off 19 million acres of prime boreal wilderness from the mitts of fur trappers, oil tycoons, and would-be lodge owners alike. Only six families of white settlers were grandfathered in and allowed to keep cabins in the refuge—of them, only one still stays there year-round living off the land. His name is Heimo Korth, and he is basically the Omega Man of Americas Final Frontier. North To Alaska ~ Johnny Horton

North To Alaska ~ Johnny Horton The Klondike Gold Rush The Klondike Gold Rush was a frenzy of gold rush immigration to and gold prospecting in the Klondike near Dawson City in the Yukon Territory, Canada, after gold was discovered in the late 19th century. In August 1896, three people led by Skookum Jim Mason (a member of the Tagish nation whose birth name was Keish) headed up the Yukon River from the Carcross area looking for his sister Kate and her husband George Carmack. The party included Skookum Jim, Skookum Jim's cousin known as Dawson Charlie (or sometimes Tagish Charlie) and his nephew Patsy Henderson. After meeting up with George and Kate who were fishing for salmon at the mouth of the Klondike River, they ran into Nova Scotian Robert Henderson who had been mining gold on the Indian River, just south of the Klondike. Henderson told George Carmack about where he was mining and that he did not want any "damn Siwashes" (meaning Indians) near him. The group then headed a few miles up the Klondike River to Rabbit Creek, now Bonanza Creek to hunt moose. On August 16, 1896, the party discovered rich placer gold deposits in Bonanza (Rabbit) Creek. It is now generally accepted that Skookum Jim made the actual discovery, but some accounts say that it was Kate Carmack. George Carmack was officially credited for the discovery because the "discovery" claim was staked in his name. The group agreed to this because they felt that other miners would be reluctant to recognise a ...

Undaunted by sleepless nights, multiple breakdowns, derailed plans, 0-degree weather and the lack of a passenger-side window, the guys create an adventurous win from a comedy of errors. Alaskan Malamute howling

Cassie the Alaskan Malamute howling at passing sirens. The closer the siren, the louder the 'harmony'. CASSIE FACTS Cassie loves to eat and sleep. Cassie came from Glasgow, and is an avid Celtic fan, and can often be seen chasing Rangers fans in her sleep. Cassie loves to tear apart anything that isn't canine and even attempts to eat horses. The sound of an injured bird being crushed in her jaws is not something I'd like to hear again. Cassie loves chasing squirrels, but due to her sizeable ass, has about zero chance of catching one. Cassie - as you can see - howls at sirens. This is unfortunate, as we live near a hospital. And a fire station. And there is a lot of police activity too. Bummer. When running at full speed, Cassie has the same turning circle as HMS Ark Royal. Cassie sheds hair for roughly 100% of the year, leaving fluff-tumbleweed rolling across every surface unless swept daily. Cassie is 7 years old. Cassie likes allowing total strangers into the house and hides upstairs, unless they have food. If a burglar arrived with food, she would no doubt swap my computer for a slice of bacon. Or some cheese. Cassie is an alarm clock that is set to 6:30am. This setting can not be changed. Cassie likes writhing around in Fox's piss, ensuring the whole house smells delightful for days. Cassie once attacked a children's toy horse outside a charity shop. The horse was unharmed. She also attacked a picture of a cat in a shop window. If she was a human, she would have an IQ ...

Grant Creek Wolves

My name is Todd Hardesty. I film wildlife documentaries in Alaska. When filming in Denali National Park I always looked forward to seeing the the Grant Creek wolf pack. The alpha female (wearing the radio collar) and alpha male were easy to spot, often traveling down the park road. I filmed the pack over two seasons, in 2009 and 2010. In one memorable encounter, the alpha female was off hunting while the male took the pups on a walkabout. They had six pups that year. Only he left one behind! When the female returned she rounded up all the pups. This alpha female was always a bit wary and kept her distance. Still, many thousands of visitors to Denali National Park had "the experience of a lifetime" seeing this wolf and the rest of the pack, hunting and playing within close proximity. This was one of two Grant Creek breeding females which died recently. One from natural causes and the second in a snare.
