BA Great Britons - 'The Dove' aircraft time-lapse video
As part of our BA Great Britons programme, designer Pascal Anson was chosen to create a unique aircraft livery to celebrate London 2012. His beautiful design is based on a dove, the symbol of peace. Tens of thousands of customers travelling to Europe over the next year will have the chance to fly on one of nine celebratory 'Dove' aircrafts, created by artist-designer Pascal from Brighton. His mentor, Turner-prize nominated artist Tracey Emin, unveiled the first Dove at British Airways engineering bay on 3 April 2012. His design is all encompassing of the livery, using the cockpit for its beak, fuselage and wings for its main body and wings, and the tailfin as its tail. The aircraft will be painted white with gold strokes of paint to represent the feathers. Doves are internationally recognised as a symbol of peace and social unity, and were also used in previous Olympic Games ceremonies, including the last London Games in 1948. BA Great Britons mentor, Tracey Emin said: "The first time I saw Pascal's design it made me smile. The plane is universal. Everyone will understand it. I like the way it brings back the excitement of travel too. I will constantly be looking up every time I hear a plane fly over -- you never know, maybe I will turn into a plane spotter!" Navy Tests Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS)
Courtesy: Navy Visual News Service, Naval Air Systems Command The Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) is the Navy's launch choice for Ford-class aircraft carriers, replacing steam catapults used on current and prior generations of aircraft carriers. EMALS lowers overall operating costs and reduces maintenance over current steam catapults, and provides less 'wear and tear' on carrier-based aircraft. EMALS also expands the mission envelope by launching a broader range of naval aircraft with less stress on the ship and aircraft systems. Implementation of the EMALS system for the Ford-class will meet the Navy's fixed-wing launch capability, while offering the flexibility to support future carrier air wings. EMALS technology was fundamentally proven by the Navy in 2004 using a full-scale, half-length prototype, where more than 1500 launches and armature maneuvers were conducted. Since 2008, component testing on the shipboard design has been underway, including full scale/full power tests of all components. A full scale test site at Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst, NJ, will be operational winter 2010. EMALS will begin operational aircraft launch testing summer 2010.
Final Flight: Space Shuttle Discovery and carrier aircraft back out of mate demate device
NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) with space shuttle Discovery on top will fly above sections of the Central Florida coastline and Brevard County on Tuesday, April 17, starting at about 7 am EDT. This will be the final time Discovery will take to the skies over Florida's Space Coast as the spacecraft will be headed to its new home at the Smithsonian in Virginia. The Space Coast flyover is expected to head south from Kennedy down the coastline past Patrick Air Force Base and then head back up north along the coast to Kennedy where it will make a pass over the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and shuttle runway one last time before the SCA heads out of the area. Discovery will be transported to Washington Dulles International Airport in Sterling, Va., and then offloaded and transferred to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va., for permanent public display on April 19. Before landing at Dulles on Tuesday, the SCA and Discovery are expected to fly near a variety of landmarks in the metropolitan Washington, DC, area between 10-11 am While travelling north to Dulles, the SCA is expected generally to fly up the coastline in Georgia and the Carolinas before taking a more inland route over Virginia. The exact route and timing of the flight depend on weather and operational constraints. If the flight is postponed for any reason, an additional notice will be released.

Women in the Navy: Aboard an Aircraft Carrier
From voaspecialenglish.com | http The United States Department of Defense has announced plans to open 14000 more military positions to women. Lieutenant Megan Donnelly is one of the 770 women on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. LT. MEGAN DONNELLY: "Managing 15 - 20 people on the bridge at a time, and it's my job to manage all of them for the captain so that he doesn't have to -- he can focus on the big picture." Lieutenant Donnelly studied at the United States Naval Academy. She was trained as a Navy pilot. She has won a Navy award for her leadership. In fact, she was the first woman on her ship to earn the honor. Lieutenant Nicole Rosales is the ship's only female doctor. She likes the Navy. LT. NICOLE ROSALES: "Not only did they pay for my medical school, but they offered me the opportunity to serve on a aircraft carrier and to serve in various different hospitals throughout the United States." Many women serving on the Abraham Lincoln joined the Navy as a way to support their families. Amber Mentzer wants to save money during her four-year term of service and then leave the Navy, but not because she is unhappy. PETTY OFFICER AMBER MENTZER: "You come in with a positive attitude and do what you need to do, you'll be fine. So, I don't have a problem with the workloads or anything. Everybody gets treated pretty equally." Ingry Pimentel plans to stay in the Navy. SEAMAN APPRENTICE INGRY PIMENTEL: "I am gonna stay in the Navy -- makin' a career out of it. I've been ...
US aircraft carriers to deliver 'direct message to Iran'
Europe and the US have expressed their willingness to return to talks with Iran over its controversial nuclear program. But despite that, the EU is seemingly still set to approve an embargo on Iranian oil. France even says the time to avoid military intervention is running out. As for the US, this week it strengthened its presence in the region by sending a second aircraft carrier to the Arabian sea. It's reportedly planning to sail through the Strait of Hormuz which Iran has threatened to block in response to sanctions. The Strait is a strategic waterway which the majority of oil exports from the Gulf to the West pass through. RT discusses the situation around Iran and possible ways out of the crisis with author Michael Winter from Boston. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Seaplane tender support ships came next; in September 1914, the Imperial Japanese Navy Wakamiya conducted the world's first successful naval-launched air raids. It lowered four Maurice Farman seaplanes into the water using its crane, which were taking off to bombard German forces and could be retrieved back from surface afterwards. The development of flat top vessels produced the first large fleet ships. In 1918, HMS Argus became the world's first carrier capable of launching and landing naval aircraft. Carrier evolution was well underway in the mid-1920s, resulting in ships such as HMS Hermes and Hōshō. Most early aircraft carriers ...

WW2 Kittyhawk aircraft discovered in the Western desert after 70 years.
P-40 Kittyhawk fighter aircraft that crashed in 1942 was found in excellent preserved state recently. The discovery was made in a remote part of Egypt's western desert. Edit: New article: www.dailymail.co.uk Here a full article: www.vintagewings.ca The ID still speculation: Quoted from 12 'O Clock high forum: "Originally Posted by Doug Norrie In photo 10 of the picasaweb series of pictures it clearly shows the ref. H-87A-3 stamped in the wing and a part no. starting with 87....which would in indicate it was one of 540 Kittyhawks produced with the a/c serials in my previous thread. According to 'Curtiss Fighter Aircraft 1917-1948' by Francis Dean and Dan Hagedorn, page 294, the 540 aircraft were bought by the British government in Contract A-1835 commencing with AK591, before Lend Lease took effect. The pipe type exhausts indicate an early model Kittyhawk, Mk I or IA. Looking through my Air Britain serials book (through the 540 a/c), assuming it is a 260 Sqd a/c, I could see only two possibles that could be considered: AL134 lost on 7.9.1942 AK693 lost on 16.5.1942 If someone could check the 260 Sqd RAF ORB there may be some clues from the above dates." "Photos 16 and 19 show faint signs of HS in front of roundel. This would make it a 260 Sqd RAF aircraft. Photo 10 shows it as H-87A3 - a P-40E model or Kittyhawk I (RAF equivalent). RAF Serials (AK591 to AK999) and (AL100 to AL230) a 3 wing gun model. RAF Cam Scheme only. Users: RAF (Desert)." "There is some speculation ...

Takeoff SST - Soviet TU144 Supersonic Transport Aircraft - 1969
Russian documentary with English commentary about the 1960's Soviet supersonic jet plane, the Aeroflot Tupolev TU-144. The film shows design and construction of the TU-144 as well as early flight tests including takeoff and landing sequences. The TU-144 was quite similar in design to the Concorde, with much speculation the plane was in fact built using plans stolen from the French. The first crash of a TU-144 occurred at a Paris airshow in the 70's, a number of later failures (some resulting in aircraft loss) meant the planes were then taken from passenger duties and used for high speed mail transfer before the fleet was eventually taken out of service for various reasons (costs, reliability, safety) although they were still used for cosmonaut training missions during the 1980's. In the 1990's NASA used a TU-144 for high speed research and data gathering. This film made available courtesy the US National Archives, ARC identifyer 653130 / LI 263.2392
Unidentified Aircraft Circling South Of Colorado Springs - Jan. 2, 2012
"COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- A plane was flying in circles southeast of Colorado Springs Monday morning and it attracted the attention of many across southern Colorado. The plane had been circling for an hour or so and created an unusual contrail pattern in the sky, according to witnesses including Fountain Police Department's Sgt. Robert Koski. "I saw a lot of contrails crisscrossing in the eastern sky," said Koski. Contrails are defined as a trail of condensed water from an aircraft, and according to John Clare are fairly common. "The upper air is still and super stable. Anything that's laid up there, there is nothing to make it dissipate other than gradual evaporation itself," said Clare, chief flight instructor at Peak Aviation. Clare said the trails last longer when the atmosphere is stable and cold, similar to the conditions seen around southern Colorado this morning. As for the circular patterns the contrails were forming, Clare said these occur when an aircraft turns at high altitudes. Clare said this said this is common behavior in military aircraft training. "If you had several aircraft practicing air combat maneuvering, that would give you lots of your little squiggles, but absolutely standard. Not a problem at all," said Clare. The representative with the Colorado Springs Airport says the plane was not in contact with the control tower at the airport and was not in airport controlled air space. NORAD also said the plane was not associated with their operations ...
Brazil Police Ram Smuggling Aircraft?
Video from From Folha.com A Brazilian website has posted a video that it says shows Brazilian federal police ramming an aircraft as the plane attempts to take off from a rural road, because the plane was suspected of operating as part of a smuggling operation. The video, shot from the back seat of the car, shows one man in the car dressed in street clothes holding what appears to be a semi-automatic weapon. As the car pursues the aircraft, the driver reportedly says "Don't fire! I will hit the wing. Do not fire!" Soon after that the car catches up with the single engine aircraft and appears to strike the left wing, sending shattered glass into the car's cabin. One man exits and the camera pans to show the low-wing single engine aircraft sitting on a collapsed left main gear. The armed man exits and shouts at the aircraft's occupants. According to a report at Folha.com, the event concluded with five arrests, including the plane's pilot and the capture of approximately $200000 in laptops and electronic surveillance equipment.
