Soldier inventions in Afghanistan 11.04.12

The best ideas are often the simplest. In Afghanistan, the ingenuity of several soldiers is said to have improved operational effectiveness and saved the Ministry of Defence money. Craftsman Adam Brunetti has fixed many fryers by dismantling them and changing every expensive component. Now a test box he has invented accurately pinpoints faulty parts and has already saved £100000 in unneccesary replacements. An accessory that Camp Bastion's Equipment Support Battalion welders have created can widen breakdown trailers to safely carry large helicopters like Chinooks. Captain Bob Hicks of the Joint Support Light Aid Detachment says: "It could be the difference between getting the helicopter back into the air in a couple of days rather than a couple of months, or not at all." On a smaller, but no less vital scale, Company Sergeant Major Kev Stacey of 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland says nozzles he attaches to plastic drinks bottles easily beat a military shower bag.

Afghanistan: Are NATO troops out of control?-The Agenda-03-03-2012

Angry protests have swept across Afghanistan after it emerged copies of the Holy Qur'an were deliberately destroyed by soldiers. Some Afghans and at least two American soldiers have died during a number of violent reactions despite apologies from US President Barack Obama, US Ambassador Ryan Crocker and various NATO chiefs. Obama said the incident was unintentional and pledged a full investigation while Afghanistan's leader Hamid Karzai told members of parliament that a US officer was responsible for the burning and that it was done "out of ignorance". The incident at the US military base at Bagram north of Kabul is not the first case of Qur'anic abuse by NATO forces and assurances have now been given that all 130000 foreign troops serving in Afghanistan would be trained within the next two weeks on how to identify, store and handle religious material. But this is not the first time the actions of NATO troops have shocked Afghans into reacting violently. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is currently heading a major inquiry, into a video showing a number of US Marines urinating on the bodies of Afghan dead in the province of Helmand last year.

Merkel visits Afghanistan amid rage against NATO

www.euronews.com Angela Merkel has visited German troops in Afghanistan amid a new wave of hostility to foreign forces over a massacre of innocent civilians. The German Chancellor visited a base near Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan. It came a day after a US soldier killed 16 people in a rampage in the south of the country. A spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force said: "ISAF offers its profound regret and deepest condolences to the victims and their families. We pledge to all the noble people of Afghanistan our commitment to a rapid and thorough investigation." The latest killings have fuelled anger over the earlier burning of copies of the Koran at a NATO base. One local man in Kandahar said: "This is a tragic incident. This should be investigated whether this is true or if he was drunk. If he did this deliberately he should be punished with death. Otherwise it will raise many questions and it will help the Taliban to benefit from this." Another said:"The people of Kandahar are very concerned and shocked about this incident. I personally feel very sad. Even I am ready to go to the side of the Taliban to fight against these foreigners." Just days before the killings, Kabul and Washington had made progress in negotiations on a an agreement that would allow American advisers to stay in Afghanistan after foreign troops leave at the end of 2014. Analysts say that agreement has now been significantly undermined. Find us on: Youtube bit.ly Facebook ...

Afghanistan's Turning Point - Afganistan

Has talking to the Taliban failed? To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Attacks from the Taliban continue to terrorise Afghanistan a decade after the invasion. With the US withdrawal scheduled for 2014, what hope is there after 10 years of Operation Enduring Freedom? Operation Enduring Freedom was meant to drive the Taliban out of Afghanistan for good, but recently they've been just as deadly as ever. Their killing of high profile Afghans, like Former President Bahruniddin Rabbani, has rocked the nation and in doing so, shattered both its peace process and its policy of 'talking' with the Taliban. "By killing a leader they have crossed the line", says Governor Mohammad Ata Nur. Rabbani's killing marks a turning point for this battered nation. Talking peace with terrorists has taken the country even closer to the edge. Former Taliban minister Wakil Ahmed Mutta Wakil argues the frustrations of his people are clear. "Major-General Atta, Dr Abdullah and others, they insist on one point, that we have to fight forever. But Afghans do not support this idea. They are tired after 30 years of war". A Film By SBS Distributed By Journeyman Pictures October 2011

Afghanistan faces daunting year of challenges

Ten years ago the US army removed the Taliban from power in Afghanistan, and by 2014 foreign troops are expected to be gone from the country. Breaking with its violent past is expected to be Afghanistan's biggest challenge this year, but by no means its only one. The government will have to plan for possible talks with the Taliban, who have re-emerged as a powerful force, as well as take on more responsibility for security. It also needs to put necessary economic and political reforms in place before the country is able to fully stand on its own. Al Jazeera's Jennifer Glasse reports from Kabul.

Afghanistan: US troops defile the dead on camera.....

From: Russia Today US troops defile dead Afghans on camera Published: 12 January, 2012, 02:58 An eye-opening video clip that made it online Wednesday may cause a scandal on par with what erupted with the Abu Ghraib photographs of 2004. Now US Marines have been caught on film - urinating on dead Afghans. A 40-second excerpt of the clip has managed to made its web to the Web and in it viewers can watch four US Marines on patrol in Afghanistan allegedly urinating on the corpses of deceased Afghan men. It is unclear of the victims' identities in this incident, but according to a note included with the uploaded file, the US servicemen were members of the Marine Scout Sniper Team 4 and the 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The group was dispatched to the northern Helmand Province in Afghanistan during the summer of 2011. A clip of US troops urinating on Afghans in civilian clothes shocked the Internet on Wednesday. Ten years after beginning military operations in Afghanistan, the US military still maintains an active presence there, making it the longest continuous war in American history. President Obama has vowed to bring back troops in full by 2014, but this event could cause widespread outrage against the military operation, with the latest incident increasing tensions unmatched since the Abu Ghraib scandal of years' past. Earlier in the War on Terror, American troops were caught grossly mishandling prisoners at the Abu Ghraib detention facility ...

What to do about Afghanistan after US soldier kills 16 including nine children

Lindsey German from Stop the War Coalition says it is not one mentally-unbalanced US soldier on a rampage that killed 16 civilians, including nine children. The US and its allies have been on a rampage in Afghanistan for over ten years. It is the occupation that causes the endless slaughter in Afghanistan. The only solution is for all foreign troops to be withdrawn now. Afghans don't want us in their country, the US and UK public don't want us there, everyone knows the war is lost.
