Fresh debate over US mission in Afghanistan

A US army officer has accused the American military of painting a misleading picture of progress in the war in Afghanistan while glossing over the Afghan government's many failings. The accusations have sparked fresh debate about the US mission in Afghanistan. "What I saw bore no resemblance to rosy official statements by US military leaders about conditions on the ground," Colonel Davis wrote in an article published in Armed Forces Journal, a private newspaper not affiliated with the Pentagon. "Instead, I witnessed the absence of success on virtually every level," he wrote under the headline, "Truth, Lies And Afghanistan: How military leaders have let us down". "How many more men must die in support of a mission that is not succeeding ...?" Troop commanders and politicians say the handover to Afghan troops is going well, but Lieutenant-Colonel Daniel Davis, who has just returned from the country, is challenging those statements in congress. He says that conditions on the ground are ruinous - a conclusion deeply at odds with the picture of progress put forth by the top US military brass. It is a rare instance of a US officer openly contradicting his superiors, and Davis' insights, first published in a military journal on Sunday, have been picked up by several members of congress. At a Pentagon briefing on Wednesday, the US military's number-two commander in Afghanistan, Lieutenant General Curtis Scaparrotti, answered Davis' criticism, saying it was only one person's ...

Attacks in Kabul, Afghanistan on 09/13/2011 (RAW Footage)

This is video of the attacks on the ISAF and NATO Security Forces in Kabul, Afghanistan. Afghan National Security Forces, supported by coalition forces, successfully concluded an operation this morning against a small group of insurgents who attacked several locations in Kabul City. Insurgents attacked the International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan headquarters and the US Embassy in Kabul on Tuesday with small arms fire from outside the secure zone surrounding these compounds. Afghan National Security Forces, who have the lead for security in Kabul, responded immediately, to include Afghan National Army helicopters providing air support. Afghan and coalition forces trapped the insurgents in the partially-constructed, multi-story building they were using as a firing position, and conducted a methodical, floor-by-floor clearing operation. The Ministry of the Interior is reporting six insurgents killed in the operation. "The people of Afghanistan have chosen a path to the future with transition," said Gen. John R. Allen, ISAF commander. "In this attack, the insurgency succeeded in killing Afghan civilians, once again demonstrating their bankrupt ideology, which has been rejected by the Afghan people. Afghan security forces responded bravely, contained the insurgents, and systematically eliminated the threat. Once again, I was impressed by the courage, skill and fighting spirit of Afghan forces. The insurgency has again failed." Current reports indicate that six ISAF ...

With the US withdrawal scheduled for 2014, what hope is there after 10 years of Operation Enduring Freedom? Operation Enduring Freedom was meant to drive the Taliban out of Afghanistan for good, but recently they've been just as deadly as ever. Their killing of high profile Afghans, like Former President Bahruniddin Rabbani, has rocked the nation and in doing so, shattered both its peace process and its policy of 'talking' with the Taliban. "By killing a leader they have crossed the line", says Governor Mohammad Ata Nur. Rabbani's killing marks a turning point for this battered nation. Talking peace with terrorists has taken the country even closer to the edge. Former Taliban minister Wakil Ahmed Mutta Wakil argues the frustrations of his people are clear. Afghanistan faces daunting year of challenges

Ten years ago the US army removed the Taliban from power in Afghanistan, and by 2014 foreign troops are expected to be gone from the country. Breaking with its violent past is expected to be Afghanistan's biggest challenge this year, but by no means its only one. The government will have to plan for possible talks with the Taliban, who have re-emerged as a powerful force, as well as take on more responsibility for security. It also needs to put necessary economic and political reforms in place before the country is able to fully stand on its own. Al Jazeera's Jennifer Glasse reports from Kabul.

Afghanistan: US troops defile the dead on camera.....

From: Russia Today US troops defile dead Afghans on camera Published: 12 January, 2012, 02:58 An eye-opening video clip that made it online Wednesday may cause a scandal on par with what erupted with the Abu Ghraib photographs of 2004. Now US Marines have been caught on film - urinating on dead Afghans. A 40-second excerpt of the clip has managed to made its web to the Web and in it viewers can watch four US Marines on patrol in Afghanistan allegedly urinating on the corpses of deceased Afghan men. It is unclear of the victims' identities in this incident, but according to a note included with the uploaded file, the US servicemen were members of the Marine Scout Sniper Team 4 and the 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The group was dispatched to the northern Helmand Province in Afghanistan during the summer of 2011. A clip of US troops urinating on Afghans in civilian clothes shocked the Internet on Wednesday. Ten years after beginning military operations in Afghanistan, the US military still maintains an active presence there, making it the longest continuous war in American history. President Obama has vowed to bring back troops in full by 2014, but this event could cause widespread outrage against the military operation, with the latest incident increasing tensions unmatched since the Abu Ghraib scandal of years' past. Earlier in the War on Terror, American troops were caught grossly mishandling prisoners at the Abu Ghraib detention facility ...

The Battle for Bomb Alley - Afghanistan - Part 1/2 - HD

www.bbc.co.uk For four years, thousands of British servicemen fought with the Taliban for the district of Sangin - the most violent part of Afghanistan. The fighting cost 106 British lives, including Staff-Sergeant Olaf Schmidt, who won the George Cross there. Last year, the British withdrew - handing the area over to the US Marines. Ben Anderson, who was with the British forces in 2007, returns to see if the Americans are faring any better. His remarkable film follows Lima Company, a unit of the US Marines, as they dodge improvised bombs and struggle to reclaim the same territory the British previously occupied. As the war enters its tenth year, with Sangin still far from secure, real questions remain as to what so many British men died there for.

US is destroying Afghanistan's gene pool water and food chain with depleted uranium

Depleted uranium is radioactive and extremely destructive to humans - with a half-life of 4.5 billion years. In other words, it takes 4.5 billion years for one kilogram of depleted uranium to reduce to a half a kilogram - the US has forever contaminated the Middle East. The United States' use of radioactive munitions in Afghanistan has destroyed the people's health and mutilated the genetic future of the country, Press TV reports. Dr. Mohammad Daud Miraki, the author of Afghanistan After Democracy: The Untold Story Through Photographic Images, told Press TV's Kabul correspondent on Monday that the US has committed horrific crimes against the people of Afghanistan. He said the US used depleted uranium in the country and Afghan babies were being born with severe deformities. Exposure to depleted uranium causes genetic damage, birth defects, cancer, diabetes, immune system damage, and other serious health problems. Miraki has described this as genocide in his book, which provides an insight into the grimness of life under the US occupation. He says that he has seen people die without any physical signs of injuries to their bodies in Afghanistan. "And then there were bizarre scenes of birds melting on trees," he adds. In his book, birth defects are depicted with graphic images. He said he was overwhelmed by the number of these cases. Miraki noted that the US used a massive amount of depleted uranium weapons in late 2001. He went on to say that US forces are still using these ...
