Despite a bleak economy, the percentage of pets in homes that were adopted from animal shelters and rescue groups has risen from 27% to 29% in the last two years, and encouraging statistics show that euthanasia of shelter pets is down 10% since 2009. However, 2.7 million healthy and treatable pets are still losing their lives in shelters each year. Bringing that number all the way to zero is the goal of "The Shelter Pet Project" campaign, which aims to encourage millions of pet lovers to make shelters the first choice and desired way for acquiring companion animals. The current phase of the campaign focuses on the bond that exists between a person and their shelter pet and encourages potential adopters to adopt from shelters by explaining that, "A person is the best thing to happen to a shelter pet. Be that person. Adopt."

BOBCAT KITTENS adopted by house cat!
!! 3 Very CUTE bobcat KITTENS are given a second chance at life after being adopted by a domestic cat !! With a gun in one hand and a sack of bobcat kittens in the other, an Alabama hunter proudly plopped the newborns down on the counter and asked the veterinary assistant to raise them up for him so he could give them to his kids as pets. The vet tech was stunned, but quickly recomposed herself to tell the hunter she would do it for him so as to rescue the babies from such an awful fate. She immediately began scouring the Internet for an expert in rehab and release. When she called Carole Baskin of Big Cat Rescue it was agreed that the kittens would come to Florida, be raised for re-release back to the wild and the paperwork began. It took three days to secure the Florida import permit and time was of the essence. The only kitten formula available to the clinic was one that often causes serious dehydration in bobcat kittens. The second more critical factor was that their eyes would be opening any day and if they were to ever live free it was imperative that they not bond to humans. They never make good pets, but the bonding that takes place during the nursing stage could make them fearless of people and that would get them into trouble as adults. The judge also rejected efforts by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services to heavily redact, or remove, information from such documents. He said the cabinet was continuing its "efforts to blanket the operation of the child welfare system under a veil of secrecy." Shepherd's opinion and order Thursday involved a 2-year legal fight by The Courier-Journal + Lexington Herald-Leader over access to records of child-abuse deaths under the state open records law. Rep Tom Burch, a Louisville Democrat who is the committee's chairman, advised the cabinet not to "circle the wagons" because the public wants to understand how it handles child protection cases.
