"Abandoned" and its accompanying soundtrack were commissioned by The Chipotle Cultivate Foundation to raise awareness about the economic hardship family farmers face in the increasingly industrialized American agriculture system. In the film, director David Altobelli tells the story of three boys exploring an empty house late one night. The boys break into a farmhouse that was clearly abandoned in a hurry some time ago. As the three explore the house - and even begin to vandalize it - one boy slowly comes to see that the family that lived there was not so different from his own. He realizes that the house they are trashing could foreshadow the future of his own family's farm and home. A frightening moment in the house sends the boys running back to the comfort of their still-functioning farms. On the soundtrack, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs covers Willie Nelson's country music classic "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys." Abandoned Rolling Acres Mall, Rolling Acres/Akron, Ohio Footage 2009
The gigantic Rolling Acres Mall has been shut down for about 4 years now. My dad does some demo/reconstruction work and he was offered anything he wanted inside the mall by the Demo company. I had the opportunity to ride my bike through the inside with my Camcorder. I didn't get any footage of the lower level. I was down there, but I couldn't take the bike. This once gorgeous late '70s mall has seen better days. Leaky roof has been the main source of problems. Also, thieves have stolen all the copper wiring so there is no possible way for the mall to be lit unless it was completely re-wired. Kinda creepy, with an eerie breeze throughout the whole place. Another freaky thing is that all the plants on the lower level are totally green. They are not fake. Totally healthy but overgrown. I think the roof is so leaky, the plants survive. Sears and JCpenny dpt. stores are still operating. I have no idea what's going to happen to the mall.

Abandoned Madison School in Youngstown, Ohio
Urban exploring: Abandoned Madison School in Youngstown, Ohio. UPDATE: This building was demolished in the summer of 2010. UPDATE: December 2009 Thanks to Youtube user stormbirdstudio for a link to a news article that relates to this building. The school was no longer a school as of 2001, and was sold to an individual who made the building into a type of youth help center. He suffered some strokes in 2006 and left town until 2009. He is upset about the deteriorated state of his building, and if he cannot raise the funds to get it renovated, it will most likely be demolished some day. Here is a link to the news article and news video. blogs.reuters.com The building is in a serious state of deterioration, but remains structurally sound. There is a lot of water damage, and paint and light fixtures are falling throughout the building. A detailed exploration was done on September 28, 2008 during the day. Surprisingly, there isn't much vandalism other than a few "tags" and some missing windows. The songs featured in the video are The Patient by Tool, and The Ghostwoman and the Hunter by Lacuna Coil.

Abandoned stable becomes off-grid, luxurious family dream home
When Carlos Alonso and his sister Camino (partners at Madrid architecture firm Ábaton) were looking for a country home for their extended family, they stumbled upon an abandoned stable in rural Extremadura, Spain and recognized it as a special place. High on a hill and far from city water or an electrical grid, the crumbling cow shed was far from the conventional image of luxury estate, but Carlos and Camino could envision a transformation. This part of the province of Cáceres (near the Portuguese border) has been home to generations of cattle ranchers and the Alonsos recognized the wisdom those who came before them. Building on the instinctual knowledge of the ranchers before them, the Alonsos preserved much of the old stable. The old watering trough became a fountain and interior patio where water now helps cool the home in summer. The hay loft above became bedrooms. The facade is still the original stone, though given the homes crumbling state, they were forced to add cement behind it. Without access to the grid, the Alonsos added photovoltaics and hydro power and worked to ensure the home wouldn't use much energy. The original position of the stable worked to their favor. The southern exposure allows for the sun to be the main source of heat during the winter. The Alonsos also added large wooden shutters that slide closed like a second skin, covering the large windows at night to trap in most of the home's daily solar heat gain. On April 26, 1986, Reactor #4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near the town of Pripyat, Ukraine, exploded. The explosion took place at around one in the morning while the neighboring town of Pripyat slept. Four workers were killed instantly. Forty hours later, the residents of Pripyat were ordered to evacuate, and most never returned; By that time, many of the residents had suffered varying degrees of extreme radioactive poisoning. The city was evacuated in 1986 due to the Chernobyl disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, located 14.5 kilometers (9 miles) north-northwest.

In 2007 the BBC documentary film 'Bulgaria's Abandoned Children caused an international outcry because the images of neglect were so shocking to witness in a country that had just become a member of the European Union. Bulgaria has more institutionalised mentally and physically disabled children than anywhere else in Europe. The film is a heart-rending and eye-opening look into the life of one institution. Eighteen months after filming it, director Kate Blewett returned to Bulgaria in 2009 to film with a handful of the children featured in the original documentary, seeing where they are today and how their lives have changed since the outcry and changes brought about by the film. The original documentary is set in a small Bulgarian village in an institute called Mogilino, a place where 75 unwanted disabled children are growing up. Many of them cannot walk or talk, not necessarily because they are unable to, but because they have been neglected and have never had the opportunity to learn. With extraordinary access, Blewett takes us into this tragic silent world. In winter 2006, Parkware moved all their operations and ride stock to Loudoun from their previous storage buildings in Margate. UPDATE: It has come to our attention from the good people at UER that this place did not treat the insane and the information we were originally provided by the person who gave us directions to this location was inaccurate and confused with another place nearby. This hospital was used to treat TB patients only. I have no records to verify if they died, were treated or what the outcome of there treatment was. To address the "scream" heard in the video. It wasn't actually a scream. We know for a fact it was just wind blowing on the boom mic of our professional camera. Which is why only chris heard it. He wears a large headset so he can hear what the camera picks up to make sure i can be heard on camera. As well as to make sure there isn't too much wind noise heard during important dialog. Chris did however, decide to crank up the gain on the wind noise during post production to scare the shit out of me when i was watching the footage. I thought it was hilarious and we decided to keep it in the final cut of this video. We are afterall, entertainers. We want to make something interesting to watch. The Tocks Island Dam Project was under consideration prior to the 1955 flood, which caused several deaths and immeasurable damage to the Delaware River basin. The need for flood control brought the issue to the national level, and in 1965 a proposal was made to Congress for the construction of the dam. Arizona, Goodyear Auxiliary Army Airfield #6 was built in 1943 as one of a large number of satellite airfields for the United States Air Force, which was the largest single-engine advanced training base in the world during World War Two. According to a 1992 Army Corps of Engineers Report, the Goodyear Auxiliary #6 property consisted of a total of 1159 acres. According to the "History of Luke AFB" (obtained by David Brooks from the public affairs office at Luke AFB), Goodyear Field (#6) had three 4000' x 300' runways, and the construction costs for its airdrome was $263000. Among Luke's auxiliary airfields, "Fighter & Goodyear Fields boasted the most facilities, each having separate buildings for crew chiefs, operations, supply, barracks, pit latrine, crash truck shed, generator shed and a control tower." The earliest depiction the Goodyear auxiliary airfield which has been located was on the March 1945 Phoenix Sectional Chart (courtesy of Chris Kennedy). A 1949 aerial photo (courtesy of John Arthur) depicted the Goodyear Aux #6 airfield in its original configuration, with 3 runways & a parking ramp on the southeast side. Several small buildings were just east of the parking ramp. Exploring an Abandoned House
Update: This house was destroyed in the name of progress, spring 2010. :( I explored the abandoned Hedstrom House, also known as the Eastwood House in Afton, Minnesota The suicide of one of the Hedstrom's in-laws took place in the barn (now destroyed) Frank Ross committed suicide in the barn on April 30, 1920, precipitated by an untimely death of a family member. This is on record at the historical society. My notes are incomplete, but what I've got is that Frank Ross hanged himself in the barn on that farm, shortly after dealing with the loss of his daughter. The curator said the vital record is wrong, because it states that Julia Christine Hedstrom (an in-law) committed suicide by hanging, but it was actually Frank Ross. This is verifiable at the Afton Museum. When you visit the museum, please make a donation.

This is the old Koehring Dragline abandoned on our sapphire claim. It is a model 205 and has the serial number: C5266. We were very close to getting it home but after being jerked around a bit by the Forest Service had having the motor shot out of the old girl I doubt it will ever leave this spot again let alone work. It definitely looks like it had been sitting there for many years, just looking at it really makes you think how long ago someone actually lived there, and always, what the history is behind it and the stories that remain.
