Steve Job's Google of the 60s: Whole Earth Catalog revisited (+ homestead tour of a former editor)
Steve Jobs called The Whole Earth Catalog "one of the bibles of my generation". He went on to explain in his Stanford commencement speech in 2005, "It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions". The Whole Earth Catalog was a kind of "unofficial handbook of the counterculture". It was, pre-Internet, a way for anyone anywhere to tap into a global economy. Founder and editor Stewart Brand set out to create a catalog- like the then-very-practical-and-universal catalog LL Bean- that would showcase all of the great tools of the world to help anyone do things for themselves or learn about big ideas. Lloyd Kahn was the Shelter editor of the catalog. Kahn, an insurance broker-turned-builder, leveraged his experience with Whole Earth and began to publish his own books. First, he wrote very popular books on dome building. Kahn had become "the spokesman for the counterculture on domes" (his dome home even appeared in Life Magazine), but he took the books out of print when he decided the building style just wasn't practical and "I didn't want any more domes on my kharma". In 1974 Kahn took down his dome and replaced it with a more traditional handmade home. "Built stud-frame house using recycled lumber, doors, windows," he writes in his 2004 book Home Work, "Relief somehow to discover old ways can work best." Today, Lloyd and his wife Lesley Creed run their own homestead in Bolinas ...

Detroit: City on the Move in the '60s Documentary (1965 Promotional Film)
thefilmarchive.org Detroit is the largest city in the state of Michigan and the seat of Wayne County. Detroit is a major port city on the Detroit River, in the Midwest region of the United States. It was founded on July 24, 1701, by the Frenchman Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. Its name originates from the French word détroit for strait, in reference to its location on the river connecting the Great Lakes. Known as the world's traditional automotive center, "Detroit" is a metonym for the American automobile industry and an important source of popular music legacies celebrated by the city's two familiar nicknames, the Motor City and Motown. Other nicknames emerged in the 20th century, including City of Champions beginning in the 1930s for its successes in individual and team sport, Arsenal of Democracy (during World War II), The D, D-Town, Hockeytown (a trademark owned by the city's NHL club, the Red Wings), Rock City (after the Kiss song "Detroit Rock City"), and The 3-1-3 (its telephone area code). In 2010, the city had a population of 713777 and ranked as the 18th most populous city in the United States. At its peak in 1950, the city was the fifth-largest in the USA with a population of 1849568, but has since seen a major shift in its population to the suburbs. The name Detroit sometimes refers to the Metro Detroit area, a sprawling region with a population of 4296250 for the Metropolitan Statistical Area, making it the USA's eleventh-largest, and a population of 5218852 ...

60s Girl Groups TRIBUTE Sampler - 24K Gold Music LIVE!
24K Gold Music performs several medleys of 1960s girl group songs. Here are some clips of portions of several of those. These clips are taken from different shows at various auditoriums. Leader of the Pack- The Shangri-Las Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow- The Shirelles Dancing in the Street- Martha and the Vandellas Be My Baby- The Ronettes My Boyfriend's Back- The AngelsSome people ask why we publish mostly parts of songs (clips), and do not publish very many full length songs. We are trying hard not to end up causing anyone any problems. We DO feel the fair use clause in the copyright laws pertains to what we are doing, since none of us have ever made a penny from performing or working in the shows. We are all volunteers, and LOVE working together as a family! WE LOVE THE MUSIC! All of the income from the shows goes to HELP pay for advertising and production costs, such as the rental of auditoriums, licensing fees to the performing rights organizations, toll free phone lines, credit card acceptance fees, sales tax, insurance, equipment rentals and repairs, etc. However, in spite of the fair use clause, we still try our best to not create problems. We started out publishing full length songs, and immediately began to receive cautions about doing so. Therefore, we are going to publish mostly shorter clips (which should not be a problem for anyone, as that is the standard way of advertising in the music industry.... How else can people determine whether they want to attend ...

Gassers At 131 Dragway In The '60s
This is an updated version of my video "Drag Racing In The '60s part 3". I made that video about three years ago and since then I have upgraded my photo and video editing software. I have been able to clean up the photos and video a bit and I added sound to the movies that I extracted from some recent video I took at the drags. I thought it would be fun to add some sound to the old 8mm movies. I also made it widescreen. The soundtrack is me jammin' on some Booker T and the MGs and CCR.
