2010 Academy Awards Oscar Nominations
2010 Oscar Nominations The stage is set for a David vs. blue Goliath battle at the Oscars, as independently made Iraq-war drama "The Hurt Locker" faces off with the most expensive movie of all time, "Avatar." Both movies were nominated for nine Academy Awards, including best picture in a newly expanded field of 10, and best director. Other best picture nominees include "Precious - Based on the novel 'Push' by Sapphire," "Inglourious Basterds," "Up in the Air," "The Blind Side," "District Nine," "An Education," "A Serious Man," and "Up." In the top categories, "Up in the Air" scored the most nominations with six, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapated Screenplay, as well as Best Actor, for which George Clooney was nominated, and Best Supporting Actress nods for both Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick. "Precious" was right behind it with five. The other best supporting actress nominees included Penelope Cruz for "Nine," Mo'Nique for "Precious," and Maggie Gyllenhaal for "Crazy Heart," whose performance had been largely overlooked by early awards shows. Sharmeen Obaid wins Oscar for Pakistan
For more details visit: www.facebook.com LOS ANGELES: Pakistani filmmaker and first-time Oscar nominee Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won an Academy Award on Monday for her documentary about acid attack victims, a first for a Pakistani. In her acceptance speech, Chinoy dedicated the award to the women of Pakistan. "All the women in Pakistan working for change, don't give up on your dreams, this is for you," she said. Directed by Daniel Junge and produced by Sharmeen Chinoy, the film follows British plastic surgeon Dr. Mohammad Jawad, who returns to his homeland to help victims of acid burns. More than 100 people, mainly women and girls, are disfigured in acid attacks every year in Pakistan, although groups helping survivors say many more cases go unreported. "The women who decided to be a part of the documentary did so because they wanted to make their voices heard and wanted to bring attention to this form of assault," Chinoy said in an interview conducted before she won the Oscar. "The main reason that they are in 'Saving Face' is to make their stories heard and have an impact." Many victims are women attacked by their husbands, and others assaulted for turning down a proposal of marriage. One girl in the documentary describes how she was burned after rejecting the advances of her teacher. She was 13 at the time. Another woman featured in the film is 25-year-old Rukhsana, whose husband threw acid on her and her sister-in-law doused her in gasoline before her mother-in-law lit a ...

The Oscars and The Bechdel Test
It's been a few years since I've checked in with The Bechdel Test for Women in Movies so I thought it would be a good time to look in on Hollywood and see if there's been any substantial improvement in women's representations on the big screen. In this updated video, I go through the 2011 films nominated for Best Picture at the 84th annual Academy Awards and see how they measure up to the Bechdel Test. Keep watching because I also propose a small addendum to help clarify the spirit of the test and provide a solution on how Hollywood can fix the glaring problem that the Bechdel Test exposes. I'll also address the question, "What about the reverse test?" and I'll show an alternative test that has been adapted by critics to identify the presence of people of colour in films. Sprinkled throughout this video I offer a few movie recommendations. Please click advertisement INSIDE this URL if you like this video: tinyurl.com FULL: tinyurl.com In support of the American effort in World War II, the statuettes were made of plaster and were traded in for gold ones after the war had ended. The root of the name Oscar is contested. One biography of Bette Davis claims that she named the Oscar after her first husband, band leader Harmon Oscar Nelson; one of the earliest mentions in print of the term Oscar dates back to a Time magazine article about the 1934 6th Academy Awards and to Bette Davis's receipt of the award in 1936. Walt Disney is also quoted as thanking the Academy for his Oscar as early as 1932. Another claimed origin is that the Academy's Executive Secretary, Margaret Herrick, first saw the award in 1931 and made reference to the statuette's reminding her of her 'Uncle Oscar' (a nickname for her cousin Oscar Pierce). Columnist Sidney Skolsky was present during Herrick's naming and seized the name in his byline, 'Employees have affectionately dubbed their famous statuette 'Oscar''. The trophy was officially dubbed the 'Oscar' in 1939 by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Another legend reports that the Norwegian-American Eleanor Lilleberg, executive secretary to Louis B. Mayer, saw the first statuette and exclaimed, 'It looks like King Oscar II!'. At the end of the day she asked, 'What should we do with Oscar, put him in the vault?' and the name stuck. Since 1950, the statuettes have been legally ...
