The Early 1960s - A Time Of Innocence

I am very proud of the television series I made for PBS called Making Sense of the Sixties. I had the chance to spend a year examining my youth and how I became an active member of the 60s generation. If you are from that generation or a child of the 60s, I think you would find the entire series of value. To see my other work visit www.theHoffmancollection.com

Mattel Tommy Burst TV commercial 1960s!

Rare early 60s tv commercial for Mattel's Tommy Burst submachine gun detective set. This was my favorite toy of all time. Load in some fresh caps, pull the bolt back, and it made a God-awful noise and it produced a small cloud of smoke around the barrel tip. It was fantastic!! Guaranteed to take your friends & relatives down, one at a time. ^_^

Jayne Mansfield Interview (1960)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Jayne Mansfield (April 19, 1933 -- June 29, 1967) was an American actress working both on Broadway and in Hollywood. One of the leading blonde sex symbols of the 1950s, Mansfield starred in several popular Hollywood films that emphasized her platinum-blonde hair, hourglass figure and cleavage-revealing costumes. While Mansfield's film career was short-lived, she had several box office successes. She won the Theatre World Award, a Golden Globe and a Golden Laurel. As the demand for blonde bombshells declined in the 1960s, Mansfield was relegated to low-budget film melodramas and comedies, but remained a popular celebrity. In her later career she continued to attract large crowds in foreign countries and in lucrative and successful nightclub tours. Mansfield had been a Playboy Playmate of the Month and appeared in the magazine several additional times. She died in an automobile accident at age 34. Mansfield's first movie role was as a supporting role as Candy Price in, Female Jungle, a low-budget drama, filmed in just ten days. Mansfield was paid $150 for her performance. The film was released in January of 1955, by producer, Burt Kaiser. In early 1955, Jayne was noticed by Warner Brothers and signed to a six month contract; Warner wanted Jayne to be the studio's Marilyn Monroe because Monroe was widely popular and made millions of dollars for 20th Century Fox. She was signed by the studio after one of its talent scouts discovered her ...

Sexist Coffee Ad (ca. 1960s)

I believe the first ten seconds of this ad are quite possibly one my favorite moments of vintage footage ever. Harvey and his wife's breakfast bliss is shattered when he inexplicably rips into her coffee making ability, makes a veiled threat that he's going to start looking for other women, and then, in one of history's great passive-aggressive turns, declares "Well, see you later" and exits dramatically stage left. Of course this outburst is entirely the fault of the wife's poor culinary skills, but once her non-fazed friend turns her on to instant coffee (as opposed to, say, some counseling) the only rift in their otherwise rock-solid union is closed and the loving couple enjoy a romantic evening in their now completely dark living room. Of course we all know it's only a matter of minutes until Harvey blows up at another trivial matter, but it doesn't matter by then. Folgers has made it's point: If you don't buy their coffee, your husband will start sleeping around at the office. An axiom that remains true today.

1960s Green Giant TV commercial

Elves! Cool typefaces! A gigantic man painted green! It's advertising, 1960s-style! At about one minute in--that's right ONE MINUTE into A 90-SECOND SPOT selling CANNED CORN--I make an appearance with a stuffed Green Giant doll. They did a lot of those character giveaways back in the day (remember Gary Coleman and his Hubert doll, fellow Chicagoans?). I guess they sold a lot more canned corn back in the day, too.

The Avengers - Official Trailer - 1960's Cartoon

I recreated the Avengers Trailer from February 2012 with animation clips from 1960's Marvel TV cartoons. The only cheat was Nick Fury, but the clips are from his first appearance in an "Iron Man" episode from 1995. I also borrowed a Paramount logo from the same era to fit with the look. Black Widow was a tough find since she was a shadow character and appeared very rarely.

1960 - Wonderful New World of Ford

A wonderful promotional video for Ford Motors' new cars in 1960: The Galaxy, The Thunderbird, and The Falcon. This ad is a great throwback to the early 1960s and JFK era of innocence. Featuring an empty field with just the three cars and a horde of men and women in their ballroom best, the ad is awash in kitschy elegance.

1960s Kodak ad "Turn Around"

Famous Kodak ad from the 1960. A real weeper. I originally ascribed the song to Harry Belafonte when I posted this, but the consensus of commenters has been that it is Ed Ames. BTW, a commentor observed that the TV show Madmen, S01 E13 "The Wheel", is about Kodaks's development of the slide projector carousel, and it reportedly incorporates something having to do with this ad or ad series into the story line. I haven't seen it myself. I mention this because that comment will eventually fall off the first page of comments and may not be noticed by people who would be interested.

The Time Machine (1960)

In George Pal's version of the HG Wells classic, Rod Taylor stars as George, a young scientist fascinated with the concept of time travel. On December 31, 1899, George seats himself in his jerry-built time machine and thrusts himself forward into 1917. A dyed-in-the-wool pacifist, George is distressed to see that World War I is raging all about him. He moves past the 1920s and 1930s into the 1940s, only to be confronted by another, even more terrible war. Next he stops in 1966, just as London is destroyed in a nuclear explosion. Retreating to his Time Machine, George is sealed in his cellar by molten lava. By the time he and his machine manage to escape their tomb, the year is 802701. Looking around, George observes a seemingly idyllic world populated by gentle people. But he also notices that the citizens of the future, known as "Elois," behave more like mindless sheep than human beings. Befriending the lovely Weena (Yvette Mimieux), George learns to his dismay that humankind has forgotten all that it has learned through the centuries, preferring instead to frolic endlessly under the sun. Plot holes and inconsistencies abound in The Time Machine, but the film's true selling points was its Oscar-winning special effects; in this respect, producer-director Pal succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Another plus: the haunting musical score by Russell Garcia.

Soviet Union in the 1960s

Soviet Union en.wikipedia.org Stalin died on March 5, 1953. In the absence of an acceptable successor, the highest Communist Party officials opted to rule the Soviet Union jointly. Nikita Khrushchev, who had won the power struggle by the mid-1950s, denounced Stalin's use of repression in 1956 and eased repressive controls over party and society. This was known as de-Stalinization. Moscow considered Eastern Europe to be a buffer zone for the forward defense of its western borders and ensured its control of the region by transforming the East European countries into satellite states. Soviet military force was used to suppress anti-communist uprisings in Hungary and Poland in 1956. In the late 1950s, a confrontation with China regarding the USSR's rapprochement with the West and what Mao perceived as Khrushchev's revisionism led to the Sino-Soviet split. This resulted in a break throughout the global Communist movement and Communist regimes in Albania and Cambodia choosing to ally with China in place of the USSR. During this period, the Soviet Union continued to realize scientific and technological pioneering exploits; to launch the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1; a living dog, Laika; and later, the first human being, Yuri Gagarin, into Earth's orbit. Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space aboard Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963, and Alexey Leonov became the first person to walk in space on March 18, 1965. Khrushchev's reforms in agriculture and administration ...

There was also an emergence of singer--songwriters that wrote and performed their own music such as Bob Dylan and The Beatles. Post Office in the 1960s - A glance 30 years into the future from Dollis Hill Research Station

Made in the late 1960s at The Post Office Research Station in Dollis Hill, this short film predicts with spooky accuracy the future of communications. If you look beyond the dated production, you'll catch sight of Fax, video phones, WiFi, and much more. This is no surprise as in 1943 the world's first programmable electronic computer 'Colossus Mark 1' was built by Tommy Flowers and team. Flowers, an engineer at Dollis Hill unveiled his computer at Bletchley Park, his work was covered by the Official Secrets act until the 1970s. In 1957 the Premium Bond computer ERNIE (Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment) was built by Sidney Broadhurst's team. The speaking clock was developed at Dollis Hill too!

Where the Boys Are (1960)

Four coeds from snowbound Penmore U. know that the only place to be during Spring Break is Where the Boys Are. The rites (and wrongs) of the spring migration of thousands of college students to sunny Fort Lauderdale are celebrated in an era-defining film that combines a cast of 1960s up-and-comers with youthful hijinks and a cautionary will-she-or-won't-she storyline of sex and romance. MPAA Rating: NOTRATED (c) 1960 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Toy commercials of the 1960s

A quartet toy commercials from the 1960s showcasing these popular items: SLINKY, MR. MACHINE, MR. AND MRS. POTATO HEAD (Mae Questel, the voice of Betty Boop and Olive Oyl, provides the voice for Hasbro), and ROCK EM SOCK EM ROBOTS. Back in those days, MR. POTATO HEAD kits did not come with the kind of slick plastic potato bodies that you see in the TOY STORY movies. No siree--kids had to stick the plastic arms and facial features into a real potato, which produced some pretty repugnant-looking results. To add insult to injury, the flimsy plastic human bodies (!) that came with those old kits could barely support the weight of a French fry, let alone an average-sized spud, so you could never get those damn things to stand up straight. (MR. MASHED POTATO HEAD was more like it.)
