1960 What? by Gregory Porter
Gregory Porter is giving fans of jazz singing a reason to look forward to the coming years. His debut album, "Water", was nominated for a Grammy and it introduced us to a male jazz singer with the kind of chops to dominate the category. For several years now, Kurt Elling has been the pre-eminent male in jazz singing. With the release of Water, Porter has served notice that Elling now has some company.

1960 - Wonderful New World of Ford
A wonderful promotional video for Ford Motors' new cars in 1960: The Galaxy, The Thunderbird, and The Falcon. This ad is a great throwback to the early 1960s and JFK era of innocence. Featuring an empty field with just the three cars and a horde of men and women in their ballroom best, the ad is awash in kitschy elegance.

Rare early 60s tv commercial for Mattel's Tommy Burst submachine gun detective set. This was my favorite toy of all time. Load in some fresh caps, pull the bolt back, and it made a God-awful noise and it produced a small cloud of smoke around the barrel tip. It was fantastic!! Guaranteed to take your friends & relatives down, one at a time. ^_^
Jayne Mansfield Interview (1960)
DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Jayne Mansfield (April 19, 1933 -- June 29, 1967) was an American actress working both on Broadway and in Hollywood. One of the leading blonde sex symbols of the 1950s, Mansfield starred in several popular Hollywood films that emphasized her platinum-blonde hair, hourglass figure and cleavage-revealing costumes. While Mansfield's film career was short-lived, she had several box office successes. She won the Theatre World Award, a Golden Globe and a Golden Laurel. As the demand for blonde bombshells declined in the 1960s, Mansfield was relegated to low-budget film melodramas and comedies, but remained a popular celebrity. In her later career she continued to attract large crowds in foreign countries and in lucrative and successful nightclub tours. Mansfield had been a Playboy Playmate of the Month and appeared in the magazine several additional times. She died in an automobile accident at age 34. Mansfield's first movie role was as a supporting role as Candy Price in, Female Jungle, a low-budget drama, filmed in just ten days. Mansfield was paid $150 for her performance. The film was released in January of 1955, by producer, Burt Kaiser. In early 1955, Jayne was noticed by Warner Brothers and signed to a six month contract; Warner wanted Jayne to be the studio's Marilyn Monroe because Monroe was widely popular and made millions of dollars for 20th Century Fox. She was signed by the studio after one of its talent scouts discovered her ...

Kennedy vs. Nixon - 1st 1960 Debate
Clip from the 1st 1960 presidential debate between Senator John F. Kennedy (D-MA) and Vice President Richard Nixon (R-CA). Held on September 26, 1960, it was the first presidential debate between candidates from opposing political parties as well as the first one to be televised. It is best known not by its subject matter, but by the preparedness and physical appearance of both candidates. Television audiences thought Kennedy won the debate by a landslide, while radio audiences thought Nixon won it by a landslide. Nixon appeared emaciated, unhealthy, and awkward, while Kennedy appeared handsome, tanned and confident. Nixon was recovering from an injured knee that resulted in a recent hospital stay. He had just arrived at the studio after a strenuous campaign in which he made appearances in all 50 states, including newly admitted Alaska and Hawaii. He refused to have makeup applied to his face, and had not shaved, making his stubble clearly visible to television viewers. Kennedy on the other hand, took time to rest before the debates and his suit contrasted well against the background. In effect, Nixon's gray suit seemed to blend in with the background, especially on the era's black and white television screens. Closed captioned for the hearing impaired.
Gregory Porter - 1960 What? (Official Music Video)
Buy Gregory Porter´s album "Water" here: www.membran-online.de With a voice that can caress or confront, embrace or exhort, Gregory Porter exhibits such an incredible degree of vocal mastery that no less a jazz luminary than Wynton Marsalis has gone on record to call him „a fantastic young singer," which makes the fact that Water (out now from Motema Music) is his recording debut even more impressive. A debut release it may be, yet Water flows with a sense of timelessness that reflects the seasoned talents of the giants of blues, gospel and soul that have influenced Porter throughout his career. Some of the singers that Porter cites as influential are familiar - Nat King Cole, Joe Williams and Donny Hathaway - and others -- such as the pastor of the church he attended as a child among them - may never realize their impact on his development as an artist. While the work of singers such as Hathaway or Cole obviously helped to shape Porter's vocal styling, his own world view, as evidenced in his seven original compositions and his striking interpretation of classic songs such as „But Beautiful" and „Skylark," adds an emotional intensity that makes each of the CD's eleven tracks speak so eloquently.
elvis presley - its now or never (1960)
It's now or never, come hold me tight Kiss me my darling, be mine tonight Tomorrow will be too late, it's now or never My love won't wait. When I first saw you with your smile so tender My heart was captured, my soul surrendered I'd spend a lifetime waiting for the right time Now that your near the time is here at last. It's now or never, come hold me tight Kiss me my darling, be mine tonight Tomorrow will be too late, it's now or never My love won't wait. Just like a willow, We would cry an ocean If we lost true love And sweet devotion Your lips excite me, Let your arms unfight me For who knows when Well meet again this way It's now or never, Come hold me tight Kiss me my darling, Be mine tonight Tomorrow will be too late, It's now or never My love wont wait.

Sexist Coffee Ad (ca. 1960s)
I believe the first ten seconds of this ad are quite possibly one my favorite moments of vintage footage ever. Harvey and his wife's breakfast bliss is shattered when he inexplicably rips into her coffee making ability, makes a veiled threat that he's going to start looking for other women, and then, in one of history's great passive-aggressive turns, declares "Well, see you later" and exits dramatically stage left. Of course this outburst is entirely the fault of the wife's poor culinary skills, but once her non-fazed friend turns her on to instant coffee (as opposed to, say, some counseling) the only rift in their otherwise rock-solid union is closed and the loving couple enjoy a romantic evening in their now completely dark living room. Of course we all know it's only a matter of minutes until Harvey blows up at another trivial matter, but it doesn't matter by then. Folgers has made it's point: If you don't buy their coffee, your husband will start sleeping around at the office. An axiom that remains true today.

The Amazing Transparent Man (1960) - Full Movie
The Amazing Transparent Man is a 1960 science fiction film starring Marguerite Chapman. Based on the 1956 novel The Shrinking Man by Richard Matheson, it is an American B-movie which follows the story of an insane ex US Army major who uses an escaped criminal to steal materials to improve the invisibility machine his scientist prisoner made.[1] It was one of two sci-fi films shot back to back by director Edgar G. Ulmer (the other being Beyond the Time Barrier).[2] The combined filming schedule for both films was only two weeks. The film was later featured in an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000. The film has received very poor reviews and suffered in popularity as a result of its low budget. Leading science fiction author David Wingrove commented in his Science Fiction Source Book that "Its cheap-budget origins show throughout. Amazing claims too much for what is essentially a thriller involving an escaped criminal..." The Amazing Transparent Man is in the public domain, and can be downloaded here for free: www.archive.org

The Avengers - Official Trailer - 1960's Cartoon
I recreated the Avengers Trailer from February 2012 with animation clips from 1960's Marvel TV cartoons. The only cheat was Nick Fury, but the clips are from his first appearance in an "Iron Man" episode from 1995. I also borrowed a Paramount logo from the same era to fit with the look. Black Widow was a tough find since she was a shadow character and appeared very rarely.
1960s Green Giant TV commercial
Elves! Cool typefaces! A gigantic man painted green! It's advertising, 1960s-style! At about one minute in--that's right ONE MINUTE into A 90-SECOND SPOT selling CANNED CORN--I make an appearance with a stuffed Green Giant doll. They did a lot of those character giveaways back in the day (remember Gary Coleman and his Hubert doll, fellow Chicagoans?). I guess they sold a lot more canned corn back in the day, too.

Wizz Jones - 1960
Wizz Jones, one of the first British Beatniks, and noted folk-blues musician, performs two of his songs and talks about his life in this documentary from 1960, which provides an illuminating glimpse of the media's view of alternative lifestyles at that time. The interviews are conducted by veteran reporter Alan Whicker, looking very much like a Monty Python parody of himself. Wizz's two songs in this clip are interesting. Both were versions of older songs, but rewritten by Wizz to mock the Burgermeisters of Newquay. The first was based on "Down on Penny's Farm" by the Bently Boys, a white country duo who recorded it in 1929. The track was reissued on Harry Smith's groundbreaking "Anthology of American Folk Music" LP set put out by Folkways Records in 1952. This was one of the most influential releases in the history of folk music, and spread like wildfire through the folk communities on both sides of the Atlantic. So it's no surprise that Wizz Jones knew of the original recording in 1960 and used it as the basis for a protest song of his own. The other song Wizz sings is based on Elizabeth Cotten's "Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie", which appeared on another Folkways LP release "Folksongs and Instrumentals with Guitar" in 1958. Elizabeth Cotten used the same kind of alternating bass finger-picking style, complicated by the fact that she played a standard six-string guitar left-handed, ie upside-down! (Search for Elizabeth Cotten here and see for yourself.)

Abebe Bikila wins marathon in 1960 Rome Olympics... barefoot.
50 years ago in the 1960 Olympics in Rome, Abebe Bikila won the marathon event, 24 years after Mussolini had conquered his homeland of Ethiopia. He won in world record time (2:15:16) & becoming the first African to win an Olympic medal. Not only that, he did it barefoot (after they couldn't find a pair of shoes that fit him comfortably)! Mind you a lot of the streets here in Rome are cobblestone & since it was so hot the race was started at sunset & ended in the dark of night lit by Roman soldiers holding torches. He was a last minute replacement for the Ethiopian team & didn't even start running until he was 24. Evidently a few KM from the finish, Bikila saw the Obelisk of Axum, which invading Italian troops stole from Ethiopia during WWII (& only restored to Ethiopia in 2008). At this point Bikila was neck & neck with the Moroccan Rhadi, but wen he saw the obelisk he surged & Rhadi couldn't keep up. Even though he had an appendectomy 40 days before the event & wasn't able to train or expected to even run it, he went on to win again in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, this time with shoes, becoming the first person to repeat gold in the marathon. You might wonder what he could've done with "modern" training & equipment, but then again this also demonstrates the importance of natural talent & determination. The biomechanical efficiency of his stride is simply awe-inspiring
John Coltrane Quartet - On Green Dolphin Street - 1960
John Coltrane plays "On Green Dolphin Street" in Dusseldorf, Germany, March 1960. This is ultra rare footage featuring Coltrane with the Miles Davis Quintet of the time, sans Miles. Wynton Kelly is on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. The audio is out of sync, I'll have to try converting it to a different format and reuploading it some other time....hopefully the quality of the music will tide you over in the meantime.
