A Look Back At The 1960s

"The Early Show" anchors recall the historical moments of the 1960s, from Woodstock to The Berlin Wall.

The Early 1960s - A Time Of Innocence

I am very proud of the television series I made for PBS called Making Sense of the Sixties. I had the chance to spend a year examining my youth and how I became an active member of the 60s generation. If you are from that generation or a child of the 60s, I think you would find the entire series of value. To see my other work visit www.theHoffmancollection.com

EARLY 1960'S CIGARETTE ADS

A collection of ultra rare cigarette tv commercials from the early 1960's. All mastered from 35mm network prints. Including one of a kind bumpers from the early Joey Bishop show.

Mattel Tommy Burst TV commercial 1960s!

Rare early 60s tv commercial for Mattel's Tommy Burst submachine gun detective set. This was my favorite toy of all time. Load in some fresh caps, pull the bolt back, and it made a God-awful noise and it produced a small cloud of smoke around the barrel tip. It was fantastic!! Guaranteed to take your friends & relatives down, one at a time. ^_^

Borderline Racist 1960's Jell-O Ad

Arguably racist/sterotypical Jell-O ad from the 1960's. Make your decision - racist or not. I choose glape!!

1960 - Wonderful New World of Ford

A wonderful promotional video for Ford Motors' new cars in 1960: The Galaxy, The Thunderbird, and The Falcon. This ad is a great throwback to the early 1960s and JFK era of innocence. Featuring an empty field with just the three cars and a horde of men and women in their ballroom best, the ad is awash in kitschy elegance.

Sexist Coffee Ad (ca. 1960s)

I believe the first ten seconds of this ad are quite possibly one my favorite moments of vintage footage ever. Harvey and his wife's breakfast bliss is shattered when he inexplicably rips into her coffee making ability, makes a veiled threat that he's going to start looking for other women, and then, in one of history's great passive-aggressive turns, declares "Well, see you later" and exits dramatically stage left. Of course this outburst is entirely the fault of the wife's poor culinary skills, but once her non-fazed friend turns her on to instant coffee (as opposed to, say, some counseling) the only rift in their otherwise rock-solid union is closed and the loving couple enjoy a romantic evening in their now completely dark living room. Of course we all know it's only a matter of minutes until Harvey blows up at another trivial matter, but it doesn't matter by then. Folgers has made it's point: If you don't buy their coffee, your husband will start sleeping around at the office. An axiom that remains true today.

1960s Green Giant TV commercial

Elves! Cool typefaces! A gigantic man painted green! It's advertising, 1960s-style! At about one minute in--that's right ONE MINUTE into A 90-SECOND SPOT selling CANNED CORN--I make an appearance with a stuffed Green Giant doll. They did a lot of those character giveaways back in the day (remember Gary Coleman and his Hubert doll, fellow Chicagoans?). I guess they sold a lot more canned corn back in the day, too.

The Avengers - Official Trailer - 1960's Cartoon

I recreated the Avengers Trailer from February 2012 with animation clips from 1960's Marvel TV cartoons. The only cheat was Nick Fury, but the clips are from his first appearance in an "Iron Man" episode from 1995. I also borrowed a Paramount logo from the same era to fit with the look. Black Widow was a tough find since she was a shadow character and appeared very rarely.

The Time Machine (1960)

In George Pal's version of the HG Wells classic, Rod Taylor stars as George, a young scientist fascinated with the concept of time travel. On December 31, 1899, George seats himself in his jerry-built time machine and thrusts himself forward into 1917. A dyed-in-the-wool pacifist, George is distressed to see that World War I is raging all about him. He moves past the 1920s and 1930s into the 1940s, only to be confronted by another, even more terrible war. Next he stops in 1966, just as London is destroyed in a nuclear explosion. Retreating to his Time Machine, George is sealed in his cellar by molten lava. By the time he and his machine manage to escape their tomb, the year is 802701. Looking around, George observes a seemingly idyllic world populated by gentle people. But he also notices that the citizens of the future, known as "Elois," behave more like mindless sheep than human beings. Befriending the lovely Weena (Yvette Mimieux), George learns to his dismay that humankind has forgotten all that it has learned through the centuries, preferring instead to frolic endlessly under the sun. Plot holes and inconsistencies abound in The Time Machine, but the film's true selling points was its Oscar-winning special effects; in this respect, producer-director Pal succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Another plus: the haunting musical score by Russell Garcia.

Journal TV - Almanac Newsreels - Year in Review: 1960

Free Love, flower power, hippies, psychedelic drugs, and political mayhem -- these were the trends of a decade that saw upheaval of social mores and cultural behaviors. As The Beatles rocked and Bob Dylan rolled, the world saw changes in the political climate: Vietnam War protests, the sexual revolution and civil rights.

The 1960's Music Revolution

A video I made for my English 2 class about the musical revoultion that was the era known as the 1960's... The songs are as follows: 0:00-1:20 San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)-Scott McKenzie 1:21-2:47 Mr.Sandman-The Chordettes 2:48-3:12 Highway Blues-New Stories 3:13-3:47 Hound Dog-Elvis Presley 3:48-4:14 Drive My Car-The Beatles 4:15-6:41 White Rabbit-Jefferson Airplane *Also, I realized that accidentally called Country Joe and the Fish "Country Joe and the Big Fish" please ignore that.

1960's Drug Culture

This is another 8th grade social studies project, but this time, it is a final. Just a simple video about Haight-Ashbury back in the 60s, and what happened in and around it. I was more proud about this video than my last, mostly because I made it in only two days, and i actually finished it the day it was due at 2AM, so I worked pretty hard on it. My other video on Henry Ford, the Model T, the Assembly Line, and How it Changed America can be viewed here. www.youtube.com CLARIFICATION When it says "LSD is Western Yoga" this is Timothy Leary's quote and he is comparing it to a religion. In a religion, you try to reach a higher sense of being and consciousness while meditating (yoga), so in a way, taking LSD is similar to a religion.

Counterculture of the 1960s

A movie describing the counterculture of the 1960s through pictures, with music from the time. This was a final project for APUSH. (:

Where the Boys Are (1960)

Four coeds from snowbound Penmore U. know that the only place to be during Spring Break is Where the Boys Are. The rites (and wrongs) of the spring migration of thousands of college students to sunny Fort Lauderdale are celebrated in an era-defining film that combines a cast of 1960s up-and-comers with youthful hijinks and a cautionary will-she-or-won't-she storyline of sex and romance. MPAA Rating: NOTRATED (c) 1960 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Vintage 8mm Disneyland 1960's (No. 2 in series)

From the parking lot ride to the front gate taking the madatory pictures in front of the flowerbed image of Mickey with the original train ride passing by, buying tickets, streets of yesterday with public transportations double decker busses and horse drawn streetcars, then riding the teacups with the tuba section playing oompah music. Now, controlled horseback riding then turning the corner and hearing a barbershop quartet on a bicycle built for four. Chilhood memories of the Magic Kingdom.

Toy commercials of the 1960s

A quartet toy commercials from the 1960s showcasing these popular items: SLINKY, MR. MACHINE, MR. AND MRS. POTATO HEAD (Mae Questel, the voice of Betty Boop and Olive Oyl, provides the voice for Hasbro), and ROCK EM SOCK EM ROBOTS. Back in those days, MR. POTATO HEAD kits did not come with the kind of slick plastic potato bodies that you see in the TOY STORY movies. No siree--kids had to stick the plastic arms and facial features into a real potato, which produced some pretty repugnant-looking results. To add insult to injury, the flimsy plastic human bodies (!) that came with those old kits could barely support the weight of a French fry, let alone an average-sized spud, so you could never get those damn things to stand up straight. (MR. MASHED POTATO HEAD was more like it.)

Sophia Loren - Images From The 1960's

Sophia Loren is still a magnificent beauty and actress, she will soon be starring in a new major motion picture production- Rob Marshall's musical "Nine", at age 74, no less! However, after formidably debuting in the 1950's, she reached her prime during the 1960's- It was her crowning decade. With this video I've humbly attempted to capture and document some of her most wonderful images, underlining her unique beauty and acting talent. A decade that began with the lovely Hollywood film "A Breath Of Scandal" playing a princess, a hilarious millionairess in the The Millionairess, and the heartwarming cabaret singer and aunt in "It Started In Naples"; moving on to her great Oscar winning role in "Two Women" in 1961, then through the mid 60's with great Italian films- "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" and "Marriage Italian Style". The latter again garnering her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. She then went on to make major international productions such as "The Fall Of The Roman Empire", "Operation Crossbow", "Judith", "Lady L", Arabesque", and "A Countess From Hong Kong". Crowning the end of the decade with the marvelous romantic fantasy "More Than A Miracle" and the funny "Ghosts Italian Style". But her greatest achievement by far was to be a mother, and after numerous miscarriages and untold efforts she managed to give birth to Carlo Jr. in late 1969. I discovered Sophia for the first time as a child in 1961 when I saw her in "El Cid". She made a great impression then ...
