(Rare!) Helen Keller & Anne Sullivan (1930 Newsreel Footage)
Quite a rare material. Helen Keller, the American author, political activist and lecturer, whom I don't have to explain much about, and her instructor and lifelong companion, Anne Sullivan, appears in a Vitaphone newsreel from 1930. In this footage Sullivan shows the way how Helen Keller learned to talk. The final line of this footage, "I Am Not DUMB now!" is somewhat touching. I know this footage have been shown on lots of more recent materials, but I was little bit surprised that nobody uploaded this before on YT except some clips, so I upload the full-length version.

Beauty - Victorian Era to 1930's
Watch this video on my site www.lisae.me.uk for product links, tips and more info. This was the most difficult video I've ever had to edit as I had to cut out so many great anecdotes, interesting facts and amazing products. Seriously, I think I could easily have made a 10 minute film for each decade! Anyway here is a little glimpse of my visit to the house and collection of Madeleine Marsh. I tried to stay calm and focused but inside I was bursting to get my hands on all the amazing treasures that surrounded me! The second half of this video will feature the 1940's through to the 70's and some incredible items - Mary Quant crayons, the IT palette all the cool British girls aspired to own during the war and a powder compact in the shape of a grand piano... to name just a few! Stay tuned X Madeleines book is called The History of Compacts and Cosmetics: Beauty From Victorian Times to the Present Day and you can buy it on Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk All images from the book in this video are shown with permission.

Classic Movie Bloopers (1930s and 1940s)
thefilmarchive.org A blooper is a short sequence of a film or video production, usually a deleted scene, containing a mistake made by a member of the cast or crew. These bloopers, or outtakes as they are also called, are often the subject of television shows or are occasionally revealed during the credit sequence at the end of comedy movies. (Jackie Chan and Burt Reynolds are both famous for including such reels with the closing credits of their movies.) Humorous mistakes made by athletes are often referred to as bloopers as well, particularly in baseball. Prominent examples of films with bloopers include: A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Valiant, Cheaper By the Dozen, and Cheaper By the Dozen 2. One of the earliest known bloopers is attributed to 1930s radio broadcaster Harry Von Zell, who accidentally referred to then-US President Herbert Hoover as "Hoobert Heever" during an introduction. Reportedly it was upon hearing of this mistake that Kermit Schafer was inspired to begin collecting bloopers, although the exact circumstances of the event have been debated. A similar situation occurred decades later when then-new president Gerald Ford was introduced as "Gerald Smith", the same name as an American Fascist leader from the 1930s. One famous out-take from Australian television is from the gameshow Who Dares Wins, hosted by former cricketer Mike Whitney. The scene involved Whitney introducing a challenge by throwing a water balloon from hand to hand and ...
1930's Great Depression and Dust Bowl in Photos
This is a video I made for an English pre-reading activity of the book Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck (Awesome book by the way. It features photos from the Great Depression and The Dust Bowl. It's a little emotional, at least to me, and I just wanted to share it with the rest of the world. The Great Depression and The Dust Bowl were 2 tragic events that occurred in the 1930's and this is just a little piece of the history of that time. I don't own neither the photos nor the music. I found the pictures on different online sources and if their information is correct, they all date back to the 30's and 40's.

Boston Fire Department 1930s
This video was complied from files in the Stillman Fire Collection, Perlinger Archives and put together to make this presentation represent how a huge building fire might have been fought in Boston, Massachusetts in the early 1930s. Note for general interest and comments that at 2:16 a relatively new American LaFrance pumper has a hand-crank siren and a Roto Ray warning light. However at 3:03 a similar ALF is shown with an electo-mechanical siren. Obviously, I added the sound effects to this video, but the original film was silent. If you wish to see the film as it was made you will need to turn your computer speakers off.
Boswell Sisters - Baby (1930)
The Boswell Sisters were a close harmony singing group that attained national prominence in the USA in the 1930s. Sisters Martha Boswell (June 9, 1905 - July 2, 1958), Connee Boswell (December 3, 1907 - October 11, 1976), and Helvetia "Vet" Boswell (May 20, 1911 - November 12, 1988) were raised by a middle-class family on Camp Street in uptown New Orleans, Louisiana. Martha and Connee were born in Kansas City, Missouri. Helvetia was born in Birmingham, Alabama. (Connee's name was originally spelt Connie until she changed it in the 1940s.) They came to be well known in New Orleans while still in their early teens, making appearances in local theaters and radio. They made their first recordings for Victor Records in 1925. However, the Boswell Sisters did not attain national attention until they moved to New York City in 1930 and started making national radio broadcasts. After a few recordings with Okeh Records in 1930, they made numerous recordings for Brunswick Records from 1931-1935. These Brunswick records are widely regarded as milestone recordings of vocal jazz. Connie's ingenious reworkings of the melodies and rhythms of popular songs, together with Glenn Miller's hot arrangements, and first rate New York jazz musicians (including The Dorsey Brothers, Benny Goodman, Bunny Berigan, Fulton McGrath, Joe Venuti, Arthur Schutt, Eddie Lang, Joe Tarto, Manny Klein, Dick McDonough, and Carl Kress), made these recordings unlike any others. Melodies were rearranged and slowed ...

1930's Hollywood Fashion on Film
glamourdaze.blogspot.com and vintagemakeupguide.com A rare archive film. A charming and slightly far fetched little movie of the beautiful people at a glamourous Hollywood party at the famous Ambassador Hotel.. It features some of the biggest stars of the day, wearing the latest fashions. In the 1930's the world was gripped by the Great Depression and very often, as depicted in Woody Allens Purple Rose of Cairo, the only source of escapism was going to the Movies. The stunning fashions of the early 1930's went hand in hand with the Glamour of Hollywood. Old reels like these look dated now, but they offered hope to millions of people. Movie goers saw an alternate reality to the grim world they had just come in from. How important do you think escapism is during times of recession? Music by Ray Noble / Vocals by Al Bowlly

Sister Aimee Semple McPherson on Prohibition (1930's)
