European Trip 1930s - Amateur Film - Part 3 of 4
www.bulsar.de American Vagabonds on Grand Tour This is my favourite amateur film. The photographer has a true interest in places, sights and buildings visited, and most of the footage has high quality. Some young Americans - "Bill and I" - travel in Europe, probably in 1936 (the airship Hindenburg is seen passing Cologne heading towards Berlin). They leave New York in march and sail home in the autumn. They go by boat and train and come to many places Lisbon, Gibraltar, Algiers, Palermo, Naples, Capri, Monaco, Geneva, Wengen, Lucerne, Cologne, Brussels, Vienna, Budapest, Salzburg, Munich and Berlin. I don't know who these people are, or if they did something more than sightseeing during this half year. You get glimpses of personal life, but in the end you find anonymity. Their tourist perspective seems to change during the trip. First they see "picturesque" and "strange" things. Algiers is a "city of contrasts". They come to "The modern French section", and then see "some strange sights in the old Arabic quarters". Some women in hijabs run away from the offensive tourist camera, while some boys laugh - at the Americans. In Vienna, Budapest and Berlin they see more of the ordinary life between the great buildings, and they see the Nazis. There are great pictures of Nazis marching in Berlin and of the people watching. Near the end, now in colour, we see a brown house with bright red Nazi flags waving in the wind. Bill stands in front of this house. Strange enough, his ...

Extension and remodel of 1930s bungalow, Preston
Architect Zoran has pushed the capacity of a 1930s bungalow to its limits through a programme of extension and remodelling that renders the original house barely recognisable. Zoran and Sandra, keen to stay in their leafy suburb that was handily close to family, have increased the floor area of the bungalow by 150%. It now comprises a series of open plan spaces straddling a central circulation corridor that provide both interesting architectural space and impressive living accommodation. From the outside, both the front and rear elevations show off Zorans skills with contemporary architecture. The project cost around £150000 (£789/m2) over three years.

The New Olympia Cinema, Todmorden
Once a state-of-the-art venue for public entertainment, the New Olympia Cinema was recently subject to a planning application from Netto Foodstores, which would involve part-demolition of the building to make way for a new supermarket, which was to include retention of the historic Art Deco façade. Next door, the Abraham Ormerod building was to be completely demolished to make way for the new car park (despite a glowing report, from English Heritage) as the developers are only interested in making money, and they hope that the local council is only interested in the words "Section 106". Both buildings are in a Conservation Area and protected by a number of local and national planning policies, however, since this video was originally uploaded, Netto have dropped plans to retain the façade and now seem content on constructing a brand new building that resembles a Victorian mill. Out go two rare examples of 1930s Architecture and in comes all manner of tasteless tat. By the way, this video was recently removed, but as you can see now it's back online. They cannot silence us... We will never give up the fight, and in the words of Tommy Scott and Franny Griffiths "we will all be waiting when the bulldozers come" Feel free to close the annoying advert at the bottom of the clip in order to watch the film in all its glory.

1930-2010 Park Hotel in Shanghai by Hungarian Architect László Hugyecz (1893-1958)
The architect Laszlo Hudec: a Hungarian who worked primarily in Shanghai, China from 1918 to 1945. Hudec is one of the most prolific and important architects of the pre-revolution period in China. Laszlo Hudec was born in 1893 in northern Hungary. As a young man, Laszlo's father, a builder, encouraged him to work in all aspects of the trade. From 1911 to 1914 Hudec studied architecture at the Budapest University. After the completion of his degree, he joined the Austro-Hungarian army, only to be caught by the Russians in 1916 and sent to prison camp in Siberia. Two years later, in 1918, Hudec was on a prisoner of war train headed for the interior of Russia from Habarowsk, a prison camp close to the Chinese border. Hudec jumped train and made his way into China eventually arriving in Shanghai. In Shanghai, Hudec joined the American architectural firm, RA Curry. By 1925, he had established his own office and was one of the leading architects in the city. By 1941, he had built at least 37 buildings as well as numerous private residences. He died in California in 1958.

Calgary: Strategic Group "Barron Building" : BizBOXTV Calgary Online Video Production
Video Produced by: BizBOXTV Calgary Video Production Every property has a history, but some have more history than others. A perfect example of this is the Barron Building: one of the most unique buildings on 8th Avenue SW and Calgarys first skyscraper. The Barron Building was designed by Cawston and Stephenson in 1951 and completed in 1953. The Building marks the shift of the Oil and Gas industries focus from Edmonton to Calgary and the growth of Calgary that followed. The new Art Deco building was an immediate success; Mobil, Shell and Sun Oil were early tenants. The Barron Building is a classic example of late 1930s architectural design that is found in cities such as New York and Chicago. This design is unique in that the fascia is very prominent on the building and it doesnt just rise up a straight slab like many modern towers. The corners step back at the eighth floor and then again on the 11th floor where there was originally an apartment with a lawn and patio off the living, dining and bedrooms. The multi-use vision for the Barron Building was grand and ahead of its time, combining commercialism with entertainment and with living. J.Bs Barrons bold brand of imagination ensured that it would play a vital part of Calgarys future. Strategic Group shares and appreciates JB Barrons vision and creativity. In Mr. Barrons tradition we have embarked on a redevelopment program that will see the Barron Building restored as a historically significant building providing ...

Dover Hydraulic Elevator in 1930s Art Deco Apartment Building
Though the building was put up in 1930. I wonder if this elevator is the original. It seems that it may be a 1950s model as it has a more Art Deco appearance and it is also hydraulic. I know hydraulic elevators pre-date tractions but they were primitive in their original incarnation and were not trusted as a means for human transport. Later traction elevators were invented and then with the invention of the safety break, people began to place more confidence in elevators and higher buildings began going up. Ok enough of that. I still don't know if the hydraulic elevator had make it's comeback by the 1930s. The call buttons and the control panel were modernized at some point. I even wonder if the elevator may originally be an Otis but modernized by Dover. As I said, the building is an Art Deco style design, and the elevator appears to follow suit (note the vent and light fixture design) and so it may actually be the original that went in back in the 30s.

Rothschild Boulevard - Tel Aviv's Living Architecture Museum
Tel Aviv's first boulevard and one of its oldest streets, is know for being lined with historic Bauhaus buildings, designed by Jewish architects who came from Germany in the early 1930s. Independence Hall, also on Rothschild, is the historic building where Ben Gurion declared the founding of the State of Israel, on May 14, 1948. Today Rothschild carries its history lightly, having become a stylish hangout for Tel Aviv's young crowd, as well as a place where the wel-heeled can live in sophisticated restored Bauhaus homes. by Harvey Stein
Third Reich Residential Architecture
This is a presentation of Third Reich era residential architecture - the houses of Reich era Germany. Many people have presented works by Speer, Troost, etc, I am doing something different. I have always had an interest in residential design. The houses featured here are typical Third Reich style - mostly middle class buildings. Although traits of these designs are found in houses from before and after the Reich, this style has a 1930s association. These houses are prized and renovated today...some Germans are not afraid of their past. The houses of this period have a high level of workmanship. So many today do not. These houses are the way things should look, this was to be a beautiful world, a sound aesthetic.
Wat Pha That Luang - Laos
Pha That Luang (Lao: ພຣະທາດຫຼວງ, IPA: [pʰā tʰâːt lwǎːŋ] 'Great Stupa') is a gold-covered large Buddhist stupa in the centre of Vientiane, Laos.[1] Since its initial establishment suggested to be in the 3rd century, the stupa has undergone several reconstructions until the 1930s due to foreign invasions to the area. It is generally regarded as the most important national monument in Laos and a national symbol. Pha That Luang according to the Lao people was originally built as an Indic temple in the 3rd century. Buddhist missionaries from the Mauryan Empire are believed to have been sent by the Emperor Ashoka, including Bury Chan or Praya Chanthabury Pasithisak and five Arahata monks who brought a holy relic (believed to be the breast bone) of Lord Buddha to the stupa.[2] It was rebuilt in the 13th century as a Khmer temple which fell into ruin. In the mid-16th century, King Setthathirat relocated his capital from Luang Prabang to Vientiane and ordered construction of Pha That Luang in 1566.[3] It was rebuilt about 4 km from the centre of Vientiane at the end of That Luang Road and named Pha That Luang.[2] The bases had a length of 69 metres each and was 45 metres high, and was surrounded by 30 small Stupas.[2] In 1641, a Dutch envoy of the Dutch East India Company, Gerrit van Wuysoff, visited Vientiane and was received by King Sourigna Vongsa at the temple, where he was, reportedly, received in a magnificent ceremony. He wrote that he was particularly impressed ...

A peek inside some buildings at the abandoned Charleston Navy Yard - January 2011
Shot with my HTC Evo camera phone. Music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Charleston Navy Yard (later renamed the Charleston Naval Shipyard and finally renamed Naval Base Charleston) was a US Navy ship building and repair facility located along the west bank of the Cooper River, in North Charleston, South Carolina. It began operations in 1909 as a drydock, and continued as a navy facility until 1996 when it was leased to Detyens Shipyards, Inc. during down-sizing. The yard first produced the destroyer USS Tillman (DD-135), then began to increase production in the 1930s. A total of 21 destroyers were assembled at Charleston Navy Yard. Today, a 340-acre (1.4 km2) section of the former base is being revitalized as a sustainable, mixed-use urban hub for the city of North Charleston, SC. The new development is called The Navy Yard at Noisette. Ground broke in 2005. en.wikipedia.org My still photos of this area are here: www.flickr.com

His images epitomized the singular beauty of Southern Californias modernist movement and brought its iconic structures to the attention of the general public. This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images.

Elrod house
www.channelbeta.net //////// John Lautner (16 July 1911 - 24 October 1994) was an influential American architect whose work in Southern California combined progressive engineering with humane design and dramatic space-age flair. Biography Lautner was born in Marquette, Michigan and attended Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin Fellowship for six years in the 1930s as architectural training, with great artists and architects like E. Fay Jones, Paolo Soleri and Santiago Martinez Delgado, serving as construction manager on Wright's Johnson residence "Wingspread" and on two projects in Los Angeles (including the Sturges House). He stands among the most successful of Taliesin graduates. The Chemosphere house has become a Los Angeles landmark that conveys both hope and folly. It was used in Brian De Palma's film Body Double, and also appears in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. In 2000 German publisher Benedikt Taschen purchased and restored the house with architects Frank Escher and Ravi GuneWardena. A Chemosphere copy is used as the set for Current TV. Although mostly known for residences, Lautner also contributed to the commercial genre of Googie. Googie was named in derogatory reference to Lautner's 1949 design for Googie's Coffee Shop (at the corner of Sunset Strip and Crescent Heights) in a 1952 magazine article by Yale University professor Douglas Haskell. The coffee shop itself was distinctive for its expansive glass walls, arresting form, and exuberant signage oriented to car ...
XXIII Festival del Quinto Sol en Calixtlahuaca.wmv
Calixtlahuaca is a Postclassic period Mesoamerican archaeological site, located near the present-day city of Toluca in the State of Mexico. Known originally as "Matlatzinco", this urban settlement was a powerful capital whose kings controlled a large territory in the Toluca Valley. Archaeologist José García Payón excavated the monumental architecture at Calixtlahuaca in the 1930s and restored a number of temples and other buildings. Most notable are Structure 3, a circular temple dedicated to the Aztec wind god Ehecatl, and Structure 17, a large royal palace. The architecture and stone sculpture at the site is similar to that of other Middle to Late Postclassic period (AD 1100-1520) Aztec sites in central Mexico. In 2002 Dr. Michael E. Smith initiated a new research project at Calixtlahuaca. This project was sponsored by Arizona State University and the National Science Foundation, and fieldwork began in 2006 with a full-coverage intensive survey of the site. In 2007 a series of houses and terraces were excavated, revealing the form of life of the inhabitants of Calixtlahuaca for the first time. Calixtlahuaca is also known for a the discovery of a ceramic dubbed the "Tecaxic-Calixtlahuaca head" uncovered during García Payón's excavations in the 1930s and purported to be from Ancient Rome. Although this artifact has a provenance similar to other items excavated at that time and radioluminescence testing and stylistic analysis seem to support the antiquity of the artifact[1 ...
Landscape Architecture in South Carolina
Five years ago, the SCASLA gathered an archive, an oral history, of active and retired senior professionals' public officials' and University Professors' remembrances of the development of the profession from the 1930's to the 1970's, recollections of the profession gaining licensure in South Carolina, and the development of the Program in Landscape Architecture at Clemson University. These senior professionals also shared their philosophy on the practice of Landscape Architecture. This video we created detailing the perspective is based on video tapes made April 27, 2001 at the Bray's Island river house of Robert E. Marvin, FASLA, and the 2001 Annual Meeting of the South Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects held June 15, 2001 at Pawley's Plantation Resort. Robert Marvin passed away June 25, 2001, just two months after this taping. His influence on the profession, his clients and those whom have known him has been profound. This Perspective yields a glance, an insight, into his character and philosophy. The Chapter has chosen to dedicate these videos to the memory of Robert Marvin. If you would like to see more, please contact the SCASLA at www.scasla.org.
Fascist Architecture
It does exist. Actually, there are many types of architecture throughout Italy. The style of the buildings definitely tells the story of when certain buildings were built. Fascism came into existence approx. the time of Mussolini--1920s and 1930s. Even the Questura has this type of Architecture--with big eagles on it. This type of architecture is meant to convey strong feelings of Nationalism and the power of the State.

"Engineers from the Oregon State Highway Department's Bridge Section designed the wood and masonry Historic ODOT Region 1 Headquarters Building in the mid-1930s for what was then the agency's Portland Division headquarters. They used the popular "National Park Service rustic style" of architecture. With state monies, forces from the Works Progress Administration (a federal New Deal agency) completed construction in 1938. WPA craftsmen, unemployed during the Great Depression, found work creating many public buildings and other structures throughout Oregon in the 1930s and early 1940s. The Historic ODOT Region 1 Headquarters Building is a rare example of the use of NPS rustic style design in administrative buildings in Oregon. The only other example is the Oregon State Forester's Office (1938-40), 2600 State Street, in Salem, which was designed by the State Forester JW Ferguson and US Forest Service engineers and constructed by the WPA. The Historic ODOT Region 1 Headquarters Building is located next to the first major urban arterial in Oregon, Pacific Highway No. 1E, known also as McLoughlin Boulevard or US 99E. Today it is Oregon 99E. The WPA completed McLoughlin Boulevard in 1935. This Portland-to-Oregon City "super highway" was envisioned as a new type of road, with its grade separations and extensive landscaping.
