Duke Ellington - Black And Tan Fantasy 1929 Arthur Whetsol plays the jungle style trumpet solos!
Duke Ellington and his Orchestra 1929. Black And Tan Fantasy. Black Beauty Cotton Club Stomp These are excerpts of the early jazz art movie : Black And Tan Fantasy It shows the band in a setting very close to what the band did in the famous cotton club, backing dancers, singers and other acts. Black and Tan Fantasy is one of the first pieces Ellington recorded in what is now called jungle style. Originally in 1927 it was a kind of solo piece for trumpetter Bubber Miley. There also exist a lovely version (Even 2 takes) where Jabbo Smith substitutes for Miley, also 1927. When the time was ready in 1929 to make a movie recording, Miley had allready left the Ellington band. What makes this movie very interesting is that not Miley's follow up, Cootie Williams plays the solos, but instead it is Arthur Whetsol. Cootie was allready in the band, but self declared in an interview that at first he did laugh about the growl/plunger solos and only after a while started studying it seriously. Arthur Whetsol was more known for his lyrical solo work, a famous example is the haunting beautyfull tone on Creole Rhapsody. Another striking lyrical solo by Whetsol can be heard on Black Beauty, also in this movie. Also note that Whetsol plays the muted solo on Black and Tan with a harmon mute, usually it is done with a plunger by others. 1929 silent B&W 16mm home movies of what is possibly a Chicago Blackhawks or Chicago Shamrocks hockey game. The footage is pretty dark. Interesting to see hockey from that era. Also shows how they cleaned the ice in the pre-Zamboni era. Games back then were played at the Coliseum.
1929 Schneider Trophy
In early 1928, the Schneider Trophy rules were changed. It was agreed that it should be held every two years instead of annually in order to provide more time for competing nations to build and test their new machines. This was a great help to Mitchell as he readied himself for the defence of the Trophy at Cowes. When beginning work on the design for the Supermarine S.6, Mitchell made an important decision, one that he had held back on in 1927. He felt that the Napier Lion engines, although always reliable, had been developed to their limit. He decided he needed a new manufacturer and sought the advice of Maj. GP Bulman, an Air Ministry official responsible for the development of aero-engines. Bulman confirmed his thoughts, Mitchell approached Sir Henry Royce, and so began a partnership between Supermarine and Rolls-Royce that was to prove invaluable, not only in the creation of race engines but later in the production of both the Merlin and Griffin engines that so successfully powered the Spitfire. Rolls-Royce provided assurances that they could supply an engine of at least 1500hp, with development up to 1900hp, and, most importantly, little or no increase in frontal area. Supermarine gave Rolls-Royce only six months to produce the power unit and the result was a fully tested "R" engine. This is a short clip from an early b&w Mickey Mouse cartoon called "The Opry House". It shows the first time in an animated film where the "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C-sharp minor" is used. This tune would become famous in animation history due to later cartoons such as "Rhapsody in Rivets", "The Cat Concerto" and "Rhapsody Rabbit". Annette Hanshaw - Moanin' Low (1929)
Annette Hanshaw (October 18, 1901 - March 13, 1985) was one of the first great female jazz singers. In the late 1920s she ranked alongside Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith and the Boswell Sisters. Her singing style was relaxed and suited the new jazz-influenced pop music of the late 1920s. A clip from 1929's "Taming of the Shrew", starring superstar silent film couple Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. This was Mary's second talkie after Coquette, and Doug's first. The film opened shortly before the stock market crashed, and subsequently did not do as well as hoped (though it wasn't a total flop). Mary and Doug would go on to make a handful of talkies separately, both retiring by 1934. Their marriage began to crumble with the making of this film, and they divorced in 1933. This old Fleischer cartoon stars 2 caracters (actually rolls of film) called "Talkie" and "Mutie". Talkie got a voice by a guy named Dr. Western, so when Mutie wants a voice too, they go seeing him. Dr. Western then explains how optical soundtrack on films work. While this film talks about optical soundtracks, it originally had Vitaphone soundtracks. Public Domain cartoon.

1929 Home Construction
This is 16mm home movie from 1929 of the construction of a large estate home. 16MM film was introduced in the 1920's as a home movie medium. Since 35mm film was printed on nitrate filmstock that could easily combust, a smaller gague (16MM) was created that was printed on saftey stock made of acetate that was safe for home use. The cost of a 16MM camera at this time cost more than a car. Thus this is a common example of a 16MM upper class home movie project.

J. FRED COOTS (1897-1985) was a song plugger, pianist, vaudeville headliner, and composer. His mother wanted him to become a concert pianist but he heard the call of Tin Pan Alley. His first song was "Mister Ford, You've Got the Right Idea," written in 1917 when Henry Ford offered to send a peace ship to Europe in an effort to end WWI. His work in vaudeville included writing material for specific performers, one of whom was Sophie Tucker. He composed three Cotton Club Revues and became a staff composer for the Shuberts, writing songs for many musicals and revues. His Broadway successes include "Sally, Irene and Mary" (1922) with lyricist Raymond Klages, "Artists and Models" (1924 and 1925), for which he wrote the music, and "Sons O' Guns" (1929), a nostalgic comedy based on Army life for which he wrote both music and lyrics. It was on stage from Nov 26, 1929 till Aug 9, 1930, Imperial Theatre, NYC. Among his songwriting credits are "Doin' the Raccoon", lyric by Raymond Klages (1927), "I Still Get a Thrill (Thinking of You)," written with Benny Davis in 1930, "Precious Little Thing Called Love", lyric by Lou Davis and "Love Letters in the Sand" (1931), with lyricists Nick and Charles Kenny (which became a pop hit for Pat Boone in 1957). A collaboration in 1934 with Sam M. Lewis produced the lovely "For All We Know" (not to be confused with the recording of the same name by the Carpenters) which has been covered by such artists as Nina Simone, Nat "King" Cole, Rod Stewart ...

Woman in the Moon (1929) The Launch - Part 1
Woman in the Moon, or in original German, Frau im Mond was a science fiction silent film released in 1929, and is often considered to be one of the first "serious" science fiction films. The title Frau im Mond translates to "Woman in the Moon". It was written and directed by Fritz Lang, based on the novel Die Frau im Mond (1928, translated as The Rocket to the Moon) by his then-wife and collaborator Thea von Harbou. The film is a strange mixture of accurate science and incorrect guesses. The basics of rocket travel are presented to a mass audience for the first time. The idea that the moon rocket Friede would be submerged in water before launch was incorrect. Though the special effects used in the movie were innovative for their time, the movie was not a financial success, and also since most of the public began considering silent movies a thing of the past in 1929.
