The Constitutional Convention of 1787

Taken from This is America, Charlie Brown: The Birth of the Constitution. Originally aired Friday October 28, 1988. Whether in Elementary School or College, the experiences of the Peanuts characters at the Constitutional Convention of 1787 serve as a valuable resource to understanding how The Constitution of the United States of America came into being.

Birth of the US Constitution 1777-1787

The current Constitution of the United States is the Perpetual Union's second. This video provides a brief history on the first constitution, the Articles of Confederation, its collapse and the process utilized to call the Philadelphia Convention of 1787 to form a More Perfect Union. The 1787 President of the United States and his Congress, ultimately, were responsible for the passage of our current US Constitution as they called the convention and choose not to change a word of the New Plan For the Federal Government sending it along to the States. This President and his Congress also passed the Northwest Ordinance , on which Daniel Webster would later remark: "We are accustomed to praise lawgivers of antiquity ... but I doubt whether one single law of any lawgiver, ancient or modern, has produced the effects of more distinct, marked, and lasting character than the Ordinance of 1787" These two laws, the US Constitution and The Northwest Ordinance are the products of the what this historian considers to be the most important US Presidency and Congress in American History. Do you the Presidents name?

Carl Friedrich Abel (1723-1787) - Prelude For Viola da gamba

Friederike Heumann (Viola da gamba) www.mdt.co.uk Carl Friedrich Abel (22 December 1723 -- 20 June 1787) was a German composer of the Classical era. (The Chambers Biographical Dictionary gives his year of birth erroneusly as 1725.) He was a fine player of the viola da gamba, and composed important music for that instrument. Abel was born in Köthen, the son of Christian Ferdinand Abel, the principal viola da gamba and cello player in the court orchestra of Johann Sebastian Bach. There is no proof that Abel studied at the Thomasschule Leipzig, but it was on Bach's recommendation that in 1748 he was able to join Johann Adolph Hasse's court orchestra at Dresden where he remained for ten years. In 1759 (or 1758 according to Chambers), he went to England and became chamber-musician to Queen Charlotte. He gave a concert of his own compositions in London, performing on various instruments, one of which was a five-string cello known as a pentachord, which had been recently invented by John Joseph Merlin. In 1762, Johann Christian Bach, the eleventh son of JS Bach, joined him in London, and the friendship between him and Abel led, in 1764 or 1765, to the establishment of the famous Bach-Abel concerts, England's first subscription concerts. In those concerts, many celebrated guest artists appeared, and many works of Haydn received their first English performance.

JMU 1787 Orientation 2010 - Embodied Survey

The "embodied survey" from the 2010 James Madison University 1787 Orientation Convocation featuring the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Dr. Carol Hurney, and the JMU Class of 2014. Carol Hurney, director of the Center for Faculty Innovation and associate professor of biology, says DNA makes a great metaphor for college life. "Everybody's DNA has two strands, but in order for information to get into the DNA or for you to get anything out of the DNA you have to open it up. In college, if you stay closed up and stay within yourself and you don't explore, you are sort of the most useless DNA molecule on this campus, because in order for you to reach your full potential you have to open yourself up." In addition to orientation, the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange will visit campus several times this year to teach students and will perform "Ferocious Beauty: Genome" Jan. 21 and Jan. 23 at the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts. Inspired by the mapping of the human genome, this multimedia dance performance showcases a unique collaboration between artists, scientists and educators. Two interdisciplinary courses introduced this year will explore science and art. This fall Dr. Louise Temple, professor of integrated science and technology, and Alysia Davis, part-time faculty member in Cross Disciplinary Studies, are teaching "Gender Issues and Visualization in Science." In the spring Dr. Kyle Seifert, assistant professor of biology, and Lisa Tubach, associate professor of art, will be ...

Joseph Martin Kraus (1756-1792) Piano Sonata in E major VB196 (1/3) Vivace (1787)

Mario MARTINOLI, fortepiano Instrument: Ferdinando Granziera, Milan, 1990, after Andreas Stein, ca. 1782. Recording: 9-11 July 2003, Rovereto (Italy) Publication date: 2004 for Stradivarius (www.stradivarius.it) Order CD at http The works for pianoforte of Joseph Martin Kraus comprise a fairly limited number of compositions and are marginal in comparison with the rest of his output, which is mainly orchestral and operatic. Nonetheless, his piano music is of the highest quality and of great musical, historical and artistic value. Kraus was quite clearly a composer with a profound technical knowledge of his instrument and was thoroughly at home with the forms and language of late seventeenth century piano composition. His main piano works are two large sonatas, (a third is lost); the others are short pieces written over roughly ten years, although there is some uncertainty about the reasons why they were composed. His central work for piano is undoubtedly the monumental Sonata in E Major, published in Stockholm in 1788 by Ahlström and written between 1787 and 1788. This is one of the most original and complex late seventeenth-century piano compositions and is a worthy addition to any good modern pianists basic repertoire. Kraus here is quite clearly an innovator and deliberately pushes beyond the established, safe boundaries of the compositional models of his day in his search for a new template for form and expression. The same attitude lay behind the way in which he ...

15 Events that Led to the Civil War

A project my friend Eric and I did for our history class. We eneded up getting a 104 and it is fairly historically accurate, minus the clothes and few hiccups along the way. But here's a brief synopsis of the events: Northwest Ordinance of 1787-Basically, what this did was lay the groundwork for how the territories west of the Appalachian mountains would be created and if they were to allow slavery. The Missouri Compromise- this allowed slavery slavery south of the 36-30 parallel and made Missouri a slave state. It was later repealed The Gag Rule- pretty much you weren't allowed to talk about slavery in Congress Nat Turner's Rebellion- A slave named Nat Turner led an attack against his owner and killed nearly 50 people over the course of 3 days. He went into hiding but was eventually hanged The Underground Railroad- a system of safe points and houses leading escaped slaves from the South into freedom in the North The Compromise of 1850- Henry Clay originally proposed this as one bill, but it had to pass as series. It allowed California to be free, no slave trading in Washington DC and stricter fugitive slave laws Stricter Fugitive Slave Laws- no longer made freed black in the north free, slave catachers could bring free blacks back to the South legally Uncle Tom's Cabin- Harriet Beecher Stowe's mindbending look on slavery through the yes of an educated slave named Uncle Tom and his hardships. The south was outraged by this book Kansas-Nebraska Act- repealed the Missouri ...

François Francœur - Symphonies pour le festin du Comte d'Artois - VII. Contredanse

François Francœur (1698 - 1787) "Suite de simphonies pour le festin royal de Monseigneur le Comte d'Artois" [Music for the Wedding of the Count d'Artois] (1773) - Suite in G minor: VII. Contredanse La Simphonie du Marais, Hugo Reyne. * Painting: "La Toilette", François Boucher, 1730 (Huile sur toile - Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection Lugano). ** Superintendent of Music for the Kings Chamber and a noted violinist, François Francœur was one of the most high-profile French musicians of the XVIIIth century. Louis XV and his Court pampered this attractive virtuoso who devised the finest, most festive music for the Kings celebrations. In 1773, for the wedding of the Count of Artois, the future Charles X, with Marie-Thérèse of Savoy, he performed his Simphonies which contributed to the "great disorder" (ie feverish atmosphere) noted in his diary by the "Intendant des Menus Plaisirs", in charge of the festivities. Francœurs suites "à la française", by their modernity, paint a fascinating wordless portrait of a period in which revolution seems unthinkable, but in which the French spirit shows itself ready for profound transformation.

Bach: Prelude and Fugue in D minor, BWV 875, on clavichord

JS Bach: Prelude and Fugue in D minor, BWV 875, from The Well-Tempered Clavier, on replica Stein 1787 clavichord. This replica of Johann Andreas Stein's 1787 single-strung, unfretted clavichord, built by Jack Peters of Seattle ( www.jackpeters.com ), is based on the sole surviving example in Gemeentemuseum at The Hague. It is an instrument with a double-pinned bridge that has a small footprint on a small soundboard. About this instrument, Jack Peters writes "An atypical single strung historical clavichord. The piano maker Stein was known for his ingenious inventions, including the 'Melodica' and the 'Saitenharmonica.' Starting as an organ builder he evolved into a celebrated fortepiano maker to the Mozarts. His late, 1787, 54-note (C-f3) clavichord in the Hague Gemeentemuseum is a model of compactness and restraint. Not only short but also very narrow, the stringband is squeezed onto a tiny bridge and soundboard. The sound is surprisingly Viennese-pianolike and its extended treble allows the music of late composers like Haydn and CPE Bach. John Koster, in his article in De Clavichordio I, points out the great differences between it and the earlier Mozart clavichord now in the Hungarian National Museum (1762). Wound strings are critical to the success of the bass octave, as are the heavy iron and phosphor bronze for the single strings of the treble. The extremely narrow tangents must be regulated with great precision." ---- Jack Peters replicator and builder in Seattle.

It was premiered in the Estates Theatre in Prague on OCTOBER 29, 1787. Da Ponte's libretto was billed like many of its time as dramma giocoso, a term that denotes a mixing of serious and comic action. MOZART entered the work into his catalogue as an "opera buffa". Although sometimes classified as comic, it blends comedy, melodrama and supernatural elements.
