Hi, everyone! My name is Mike Penny and I play an ancient 3-stringed Japanese lute called the Tsugaru shamisen. I am a former member of the 6-piece balkan gypsy group Fishtank Ensemble, and I currently perform in Shamalamacord and Monsters of Shamisen. Check out the videos! Haven't covered a Gregory Brothers tune in a while, but I've always really liked this songification. Powerful but peaceful prose set to mighty moderate melodies by the one and only SchmoYOho. 高橋竹山 (たかはし・ちくざん / Takahashi Chikuzan) the shamisen master 明治43年(1910) 6月、青森県東津軽郡中平内村(現・平内町) 字小湊(あざ・こみなと)で生まれる。 本名定蔵。 幼いころ麻疹(ましん/はしか)をこじらせ半ば失明する。 近在のボサマ(盲目の門付芸人)から三味線と唄を習って東北近県を門付けして歩いた。 昭和19年（1944）、青森県立八戸盲唖学校に入学し、鍼灸・マッサージの免状を取得。 戦後は「津軽民謡の神様」と言われた成田雲竹の伴奏者として各地を興行、竹山を名乗る。 この間、「りんご節」「鰺ヶ沢甚句」「十三の砂山」等、数々の津軽民謡を新たに三味線曲として編曲した。 (1963年(昭和38年) キングレコードより史上初の津軽三味線独奏LPレコード『源流・高橋竹山の世界～津軽三味線』を発売。これによって竹山の名は津軽三味線奏者としての名声を得る。wikipedia) 昭和39年に独立、津軽三味線の独奏という芸域を切り開き、全国に竹山ブームを巻き起こす。 平成10年（1998）2月5日、喉頭ガンのため死去。 戒名「風雪院調絃竹山居士」。(オフィシャルサイトより抜粋)

Kyle Abbot who wrote the book on how to make and play your own Shamisen visits the Tsugaru region of northern Japan with Grant and Kevin. Baily, a high school student from Misawa air Base joins them. This was filmed just outside of Aomori at the san nai maru yama Historical site. Tsugaru Shamisen comes from this region and developed mostly in the 20th century. It is still evolving to this day.

Mike Penny plays a traditional piece of the Tsugaru shamisen repertoire called San-sagari, named for the particular tuning that the piece is played in. "San-sagari" means to lower the third string a whole step, thus changing the original tuning, (called "hon-choushi") from fourth-fifth (in C: CFC) to a tuning of stacked fourths (CF-Bb).
